Mystery shopping: how it works and what it really pays
A mystery shopping assignment involves following a scenario, observing a customer experience, and submitting a detailed report. Learn how to assess published pay, separate reimbursements from earnings, understand the rules in France, and spot fake recruiters before you commit.

Thinking about mystery shopping as a way to supplement your budget? The idea sounds appealing: experience a service, notice what happens, and get paid for reporting it. But the work extends beyond your time inside a store. You also need to prepare, follow the assigned scenario, and describe your observations accurately enough for the report to be useful.
The most important distinction is between your work fee, reimbursed expenses, and any personal benefit from the experience. An advertised amount does not tell the whole story. This guide focuses on providers and legal arrangements in France, with official scam warnings that help you recognize suspicious requests. French tax rules and contract terms should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
- Per assignment at Globis
- €10–€50
- This provider's advertised range, not a national average.
- Maximum in a Qualimetrie example
- €100
- Up to this amount for a workshop appointment-booking assignment in Nice.
- Ipsos reporting deadline
- 12 hours
- The French FAQ specifies this deadline after an assignment.
- iShopFor Ipsos France registration
- €0
- Registration is advertised as free.
These figures mainly show how much conditions differ between providers and assignments. A higher advertised amount may be less attractive after travel, preparation, and unreimbursed expenses. A nearby assignment with a smaller fee might fit your schedule better. Compare the complete offer rather than treating the largest number as the best opportunity.
What is mystery shopping, and what does a shopper actually do?
A mystery shopper acts like an ordinary customer without announcing that they are evaluating the experience. They follow a scenario supplied by the research company. Qualimetrie's mystery shopping portal describes this anonymous approach and lists cleanliness and the quality of advice among the criteria observed. The goal is a structured account, not simply an improvised opinion about whether you enjoyed the visit.
Separate what happened from how you felt about it. “The advisor explained the differences between the options” describes an observable action. “The advisor was excellent” is primarily a judgment. A questionnaire may ask for both, but your answers should match the questions and the facts. Precise, consistent observations matter more than making the report sound enthusiastic.
The format is not limited to store visits. iShopFor Ipsos France also describes mystery calls and online purchase tests. That differs from product testing, which focuses on using an item, or a survey, which collects responses to questions. To compare these options, read our guides to becoming a product tester and choosing legitimate paid survey panels.
How do you become a mystery shopper?
Start with the company's official portal, not contact details supplied in an unexpected message. Complete your profile and location accurately. BVA Mystery Shopping says assignment allocation takes both into account. Registration therefore does not mean you will receive an assignment immediately, or that every application will be accepted. Your profile needs to match the particular opportunity.
The French Ipsos FAQ says shoppers have no imposed minimum or maximum number of assignments. That describes flexibility, not available volume. Globis also states that it cannot guarantee an exact number of assignments. More generally, task availability varies by day, country, and profile. Do not build a household budget around a frequency that the provider has not promised.
For your first assignment, choose an offer whose scenario, travel requirements, and reporting expectations you fully understand. After registering with Qualimetrie or another provider, follow the portal's instructions and wait for confirmed allocation before arranging a visit. Age, equipment, and other eligibility requirements need to be checked on the official site. Ask about anything unclear before you commit time or money.
What happens during a visit, from briefing to payment?
The brief—the assignment instructions—is your reference document. It may specify the scenario, observation criteria, visit window, possible purchase, and required evidence. BVA describes assignments performed according to a precise scenario. Read the instructions before leaving, and ask for clarification if something is ambiguous. Improvising can make your observations difficult to interpret or inconsistent with the intended evaluation.
| What it represents | What to check | |
|---|---|---|
| Work fee | Payment for the work specified in the offer | Keep it separate from purchase reimbursements |
| Purchase reimbursement | Repayment of an authorized expense you advanced | Confirm eligible purchases, limits, and evidence |
| Consumption benefit | Personal value of a product or service | Do not count it as cash profit |
Sources: Globis Survey — recruitment and FAQ; Qualimetrie — Espace Client Qualité; FTC — Mystery Shopping Scams. Editorial summary: confirm amounts and their breakdown in the offer and contract.
During the visit, focus on the observations requested and avoid adding behavior that changes the scenario. A receipt or photo may be required, but neither is a verified universal requirement. Check what evidence the brief requests and how to submit it. Do not photograph people or documents just because you think they might be useful later.
- 1Confirm allocation
Make sure the assignment has actually been allocated to you before traveling.
- 2Review the scenario
Identify observation points, authorized expenses, and the reporting deadline.
- 3Complete the visit
Act naturally and follow the scenario without adding unnecessary steps.
- 4Keep the requested evidence
Save the required documents and check that they are usable.
- 5Write from your observations
Answer while the details are fresh, then check for inconsistencies.
- 6Track payment
Compare the amounts received with the agreed fee and reimbursement terms.
Put reporting time on your calendar alongside the visit. The French iShopFor Ipsos FAQ asks shoppers to answer the questions within 12 hours of completing the assignment. That deadline is specific to Ipsos. For other providers, check the stated deadline, how corrections are handled, and the payment conditions.

How much does mystery shopping really pay?
Globis Survey advertises payment of €10–€50 per assignment. That is a useful public reference for this company, not a universal French pay scale. It cannot establish what every visit pays or support a monthly earnings estimate. Globis explicitly says it cannot guarantee an exact number of assignments.
Qualimetrie's Espace Client Qualité displays examples of up to €80 for an automotive experience in Lyon and €100 for booking a workshop appointment in Nice. Other examples show smaller amounts. These listings do not provide a complete breakdown between work payment, reimbursement, and consumption benefits, or establish the amount remaining after taxes.
| € | |
|---|---|
| Automotive experience — Lyon | Up to €80 |
| Workshop appointment booking — Nice | Up to €100 |
| Takeaway order — Lille | Up to €15 |
| Branch appointment — Strasbourg | Up to €15 |
| Airport experience — Paris | Up to €25 |
To assess an offer, include preparation, travel, the visit, and the questionnaire in your total time. Then compare the work fee with expenses you must cover yourself. Reimbursing a purchase does not pay for those hours. The available sources establish no representative average net hourly or monthly income. A high advertised maximum cannot substitute for that missing information.
Are purchases and travel expenses reimbursed?
Paying for a purchase upfront can be part of a legitimate assignment. The FTC explains that mystery shoppers typically buy the product or service themselves before reimbursement. Qualivox also describes assignments involving reimbursed purchases. This is different from paying to get recruited: an authorized purchase funds a defined assignment expense, not access to work.
Before buying anything, confirm the eligible product or service, reimbursement limit, required evidence, and payment conditions. A receipt may be necessary, but the offer determines that requirement. Travel reimbursement is not a universal rule either. Do not assume transportation, parking, or an extra purchase will be covered just because the main purchase is reimbursable.
A reimbursed meal or item may have personal value without becoming cash profit. If you would not otherwise have bought it, keep that benefit separate from money available for your bills. The same distinction helps when comparing paid product testing: receiving or keeping a product does not necessarily mean receiving a cash payment.
Do you need to be self-employed in France?
Not every shopper needs to register as an auto-entrepreneur. Qualimetrie's mystery shopping portal says it provides a fixed-term employment contract, called a CDD in France, for each assignment. Field & Solutions also states that it issues employment contracts for survey assignments. Employment is therefore an established option, not something a general self-employment rule can overlook.
However, confirm whether the contract described on Qualimetrie's mystery shopping portal applies to newer experiences on its other portal. Ask about your specific offer. For independent work, a micro-enterprise may be an option. Service Public Entreprendre defines it as a sole proprietorship with simplified tax and social security arrangements. That general definition does not automatically classify every mystery shopping activity.
| What is established | What needs confirmation | |
|---|---|---|
| Employment contract | Yes — Qualimetrie and Field & Solutions | The specific assignment's contract |
| Micro-enterprise | An existing self-employment regime | Classification of the activity |
| Private individual | Not confirmed for Ipsos | Written terms |
| Copyright royalties | Applicability not established | Classification with Urssaf |
Sources: Qualimetrie — mystery shopping portal; Field & Solutions; iShopFor Ipsos France — FAQ, private-individual status not confirmed in the accessible passages; Service Public Entreprendre — Micro-entrepreneur; Urssaf — Artiste-auteur. ✓ means the arrangement is documented for the named providers, not every assignment.
Completing a questionnaire does not automatically make it work eligible for copyright royalties. Urssaf, which collects French social security contributions, describes the artist-author scheme as applying to artistic income; that alone does not cover a visit report. If a provider proposes this arrangement, request a written explanation and appropriate confirmation. Our guide to combining French micro-enterprise status with micro-task income provides general background.
How do you report fees and reimbursements for French taxes?
Start with your contract and payment documents, not the label “mystery shopper.” Employment income and independent service income are not treated identically. Keep the documents supplied by the provider and ask about amounts labeled as fees, expenses, or reimbursements without explanation. No single tax treatment has been established as applicable to every mystery shopping assignment.
If your independent activity is properly classified as BNC—non-commercial profits, micro-BNC is a simplified tax regime. BOFiP specifies a 34% flat-rate allowance on receipts when calculating taxable profit. It is neither a social contribution nor money paid to you. Service Public Entreprendre gives a 25.6% social contribution rate for micro-BNC micro-entrepreneurs affiliated with the general social security scheme, checked in November. That rate does not apply to all mystery shoppers.
The French tax authority, DGFiP, instructs taxpayers under the micro regime to report receipts on form 2042-C-PRO without deducting expenses. Service Public says turnover is reported to Urssaf monthly or quarterly, depending on the chosen option. Do not assume every purchase reimbursement is excluded from turnover: its treatment depends on the contract and classification. Ask Urssaf and your tax office, and see our guide to reporting small online activity income in France.
Which companies should you check, and what does MSPA membership mean?
Qualimetrie, Globis, iShopFor Ipsos France, BVA Mystery Shopping, and Field & Solutions publish useful information about their activities or conditions. But those facts have different scopes. Globis's pay range, Ipsos's reporting deadline, and Field & Solutions' employment contracts do not create a shared set of rules. Compare each provider's offer on its own terms.
| Published reference | Published amount | MSPA Elite list | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qualimetrie (France) | Scenarios; CDD on the visit portal | Examples up to €100 | |
| Globis | Assignment volume not guaranteed | €10–€50 per assignment | Check |
| iShopFor Ipsos France | Questionnaire within 12 hours | Not disclosed here | Check |
| BVA Mystery Shopping | Profile and location considered | Check | Check |
| Field & Solutions | Employment contracts advertised | Check | Check |
| BARE International Inc. Belgium Branch | Identified Belgian entity | Check | |
| Helion Market Research Africa | Identified entity | Check | |
| Multi-Value Group (France) | Identified French entity | Check | |
| Ipsos Channel Performance UK | Separate UK entity | Check |
Sources: official Qualimetrie, Globis, iShopFor Ipsos France, BVA, and Field & Solutions portals; official MSPA Europe/Africa Elite Member list, checked in November. ✓ means the exact entity appears on that list. “Check” does not mean it is not a member.
MSPA is an industry trade association. Its Europe/Africa directory supports searches by company name, location, industry, or service. Elite status lasts for one calendar year, so check the exact entity and relevant period. The inclusion of Ipsos Channel Performance UK does not, by itself, establish the status of iShopFor Ipsos France.
Membership is a professional reference, not proof that a message using a company's name is genuine. The FTC states that MSPA does not hire mystery shoppers itself. Globis seeks French-speaking applicants in Maghreb countries, but available assignments still need checking. Neither French rates nor French legal arrangements should be extended to other countries without local confirmation.
How can you spot a mystery shopping scam?
A classic trap starts with a check and instructions to send some of the money back. The Federal Trade Commission, the US consumer protection agency, identifies this mechanism when the supposed reason is taxes or fees. Its separate fake-check alert also documents recruiters requesting gift card purchases followed by disclosure of the cards' codes.
A check appearing in your balance does not prove it is valid. The FTC warns that a bank may discover the fraud weeks later and require repayment of money spent. Do not return an alleged surplus by bank transfer or share gift card codes. If someone claims money needs returning, contact your bank before acting rather than following the supposed recruiter's instructions.
Fees to access work are another warning sign. France's DGCCRF, the consumer protection and fraud enforcement authority, warns about job offers requiring upfront payment for documentation or databases. That differs from an authorized purchase under a genuine assignment. The key is what you are being asked to fund. For broader checks, read our guide to legitimate work-from-home options and job scams.
- Good sign:You can find the company and offer through its official portal.
- Good sign:The scenario and contractual arrangement are explained.
- Good sign:Authorized expenses and reimbursement terms are clear.
- Good sign:You know the reporting deadline and required evidence.
- Warning sign:You are asked for fees, a deposit, or an account top-up to unlock earnings.
- Warning sign:You are asked to deposit a check and send money back.
- Warning sign:You are asked for a secret code, SMS code, or gift card codes.
- Warning sign:You are required to work outside the platform through WhatsApp or Telegram.
- Stop communicating and save messages, documents, and contact details.
- Alert your bank if you deposited a check, sent money, or disclosed sensitive information.
- File a police complaint if you are a victim. Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr recommends these steps for fraudulent job offers received by email.
Where does Microtaches fit, and how do withdrawals work?
Microtaches is a separate option for people who also want access to short remote tasks. Registration is free, each account is approved by the team, and the profile questionnaire is required. Completing it adds a 10 Ops bonus. Responses are checked manually or automatically before earnings are credited. Task availability varies by day, country, and profile.
Ops are Microtaches' earnings unit. For withdrawals, 1 Ops equals €0.0042. In the shop, it represents €0.0082 in gift card value. These are different uses: 1,000 Ops equals €4.20 for withdrawal or €8.20 in the shop. Gift card value is not cash available in your bank account. Our guide to converting Ops into euros and gift cards explains the distinction.
| € | |
|---|---|
| 1,000 Ops | €4.20 |
| 5,000 Ops | €21 |
| 25,000 Ops | €105 |
The minimum withdrawal is 5,000 Ops, with a 10,000 Ops non-withdrawable reserve. Your balance must therefore reach 15,000 Ops for a first withdrawal of 5,000 Ops, worth €21. Bank transfers using an IBAN—the international identifier for your bank account—are available at the minimum withdrawal level. PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, MVola, Orange Money, Wave, and MTN MoMo are available from 25,000 Ops. Consider the applicable method before planning a withdrawal.
Microtaches withdrawals: conditions to plan around
Your Ops can be withdrawn to a bank account, a mobile money account or an online wallet. Bank transfer is available from the usual minimum; MVola, Orange Money, Wave, MTN MoMo, PayPal, Skrill and Neteller are available from 25,000 Ops; Revolut and Crypto are coming soon. In France, mobile money is often the most convenient option.
| Type | Availability | Where it is used | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bank transfer (IBAN) | Bank | Available from the usual minimum | Bank account with an IBAN, in Europe or elsewhere (fixed fee outside Europe) |
| MVola | Mobile money | Available from 25,000 Ops | Madagascar |
| Orange Money | Mobile money | Available from 25,000 Ops | Madagascar, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Cameroon, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, DR Congo… |
| Wave | Mobile money | Available from 25,000 Ops | Senegal, Ivory Coast, Mali, Burkina Faso… |
| MTN MoMo | Mobile money | Available from 25,000 Ops | Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Benin, Guinea, Congo, Ghana… |
| PayPal | Online wallet | Available from 25,000 Ops | Countries where PayPal lets you receive money |
| Skrill | Online wallet | Available from 25,000 Ops | International online wallet |
| Neteller | Online wallet | Available from 25,000 Ops | International online wallet |
| Revolut | Neobank | Coming soon (no date yet) | Coming soon |
| Crypto | Cryptocurrency | Coming soon (no date yet) | Coming soon |
Methods shown on the Withdrawals page of your Microtaches account. Countries listed are examples where the service is common.
Identity verification, or KYC, becomes accessible at a balance of 1,000 Ops. It requires an identity document and proof of address, with processing taking no more than 7 business days. Verification is mandatory before your first withdrawal or shop order. The receiving account must carry the same name as your verified identity. Complete this step ahead of your payment request.
Withdrawal payment can take up to 3 weeks after the request is approved; shop orders can take up to 2 weeks. The withdrawal cap is €2,500 per year per worker, an internal Microtaches rule, not a tax exemption. These timelines suit a gradual supplement better than an urgent bill. Revolut and Crypto are listed as coming soon, without a date, so they should not underpin a current withdrawal plan.
Is this a worthwhile way to supplement your income?
Shopping assignments may suit you if you enjoy observing details, following instructions, and writing accurately. Whether an offer fits your schedule depends on its location and the time needed for reporting after the visit. A nearby offer with clear terms can be worth considering. An assignment involving lengthy travel, a substantial purchase advance, and an unclear payment breakdown deserves closer scrutiny before you accept.
Do not treat the activity as a predictable monthly paycheck. Globis does not guarantee assignment volume, and the available sources establish no representative average net income. Compare alternatives in our selection of extra income ideas. The goal is not to collect registrations. It is to choose work whose time commitment, costs, and conditions you understand.
Mystery shopping can be a useful occasional supplement. Judge an assignment by its work fee, total time, and unreimbursed expenses, not its advertised amount alone.
- Some providers publish their pay ranges.
- Employment-contract assignments exist in France.
- Available formats extend beyond store visits.
- Authorized purchases may be reimbursed under the terms.
- The MSPA directory provides an additional professional reference.
- Assignment volume is not guaranteed.
- Preparation and reporting also take time.
- Purchase advances can tie up your budget.
- Contracts and reimbursements need careful reading.
- Fake recruiters can impersonate established companies.
What else should you know before your first assignment?
Practical questions often come up when applying: do you need a business registration, must you advance a purchase, and when is the report due? The answers below separate published provider information from conditions that depend on the individual offer. Keep the brief and contract as the reference for your assignment.
- What is a mystery shopper?
- A mystery shopper evaluates a customer experience while acting as an ordinary customer and following an assigned scenario. They then submit their observations in a questionnaire. Qualimetrie lists cleanliness and the quality of advice among its observation criteria. The work includes preparation and reporting, not just spending time on the visit.
- How do you become a mystery shopper in France?
- Register through a provider's official portal, complete your profile, and review available offers and their conditions. Allocation may depend on your location and profile, as BVA explains. Wait for confirmation before traveling. Before accepting, check the contract, scenario, work fee, reporting expectations, and any purchases you may need to fund.
- How much can you earn per assignment?
- Globis advertises €10–€50 per assignment. Qualimetrie displays examples of up to €80 and €100, without fully detailing the payment breakdown. These figures are neither a national average nor an established after-tax payment. Compare the actual work fee with all time involved and any expenses that will not be reimbursed.
- Can mystery shopping provide a full-time living?
- The available sources do not establish it as dependable full-time income. Globis says it cannot guarantee an exact number of assignments, and no representative average net monthly income is established. Treat it as a potential occasional supplement rather than a predictable salary. Availability depends on factors including territory, profile, and the offers available.
- Do you have to register as an auto-entrepreneur?
- No, not in every case. Qualimetrie's mystery shopping portal advertises a fixed-term employment contract per assignment, and Field & Solutions describes employment contracts. For independent offers, confirm the appropriate status and activity classification. Ask about the specific assignment before registering a micro-enterprise, rather than assuming that all providers use the same arrangement.
- Can a questionnaire be paid through copyright royalties?
- That is not automatically justified. Urssaf describes the artist-author scheme as applicable to artistic income, but no specific official validation establishes that an ordinary mystery shopping questionnaire qualifies. If a company proposes this arrangement, ask for a written explanation and have Urssaf confirm the classification appropriate to your circumstances before relying on it.
- Do you have to pay for purchases upfront?
- You may need to under a legitimate assignment. The FTC explains that mystery shoppers typically pay for products or services before reimbursement. Check spending limits, authorized purchases, required evidence, and reimbursement terms. An agreed purchase advance differs from recruitment fees, a deposit, or an account top-up demanded to unlock earnings.
- Do you need a receipt, and when is the report due?
- Evidence requirements depend on the brief; there is no established universal receipt or photo rule. Keep exactly what the assignment requests. The French iShopFor Ipsos FAQ asks shoppers to answer within 12 hours of completing the assignment. That deadline is specific to Ipsos, so check your own provider's instructions rather than assuming it applies everywhere.
- Does MSPA membership guarantee that a company is trustworthy?
- Membership is a professional reference, not a guarantee for every offer using a company's name or logo. Verify the exact entity in the official directory and contact it through its own portal. The FTC says MSPA does not hire mystery shoppers itself. One subsidiary's membership does not establish membership for every other entity in the group.
- What if someone sends a check and asks me to return money?
- Do not send the money back; contact your bank. The FTC identifies this as a scam mechanism because a check may be discovered to be fake weeks after appearing in your account. Stop communicating and preserve the evidence. Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr also recommends alerting your bank and filing a police complaint if you are a victim.
