Toloka review: Mindrift tasks, earnings and payments

A useful Toloka review needs to explain where contributors now work, not just repeat older descriptions of a microtask app. Comparing “Toloka for beginners” with “Mindrift for experts” as completely separate services no longer matches the official contributor landing page. The change affects where you sign in, which terms apply and which payment information deserves your attention.

This guide separates published rules, project-specific conditions and questions that only your account can settle. It does not claim an average hourly rate or a monthly income. If the terminology is unfamiliar, our guide to AI training jobs explains the human work behind automated systems and helps you assess whether the activity fits your skills.

Toloka review: are Toloka and Mindrift still separate?

The official Toloka contributor page says that tasks and projects have moved to Mindrift. It now describes a common progression: create an account, explore all-access tasks, add your skills and pass qualifications for suitable specialized projects. That announcement does not establish that every older screen, project or individual account behaves in exactly the same way during the transition.

The Toloka Platforms Terms of Use identify Toloka AI BV, a company incorporated in the Netherlands. Their scope includes mindrift.ai, we.toloka.ai and toloka.ai. You therefore do not have to infer the operator’s identity from an app name or a social media message. The applicable contract and official domain are more dependable reference points than someone claiming to be a recruiter.

For a returning contributor, recovering access matters more than starting a new registration. The terms allow only one account and require you to use the previously registered account after a period of inactivity. If signing in fails, contact support through the official website. Do not open another account to work around the problem, and never hand your account to an intermediary promising to fix it.

What separates all-access tasks from specialized projects?

According to the Mindrift FAQ, the all-access category does not require education, experience or particular skills as an entry requirement. That does not mean every assignment is easy. Understanding instructions, noticing a contradiction and explaining a judgment can still require careful thought. “All-access” describes the entry route; it is not a waiver of quality checks or a promise of suitable work whenever you sign in.

Specialized projects call for deep domain knowledge, usually supported by relevant education and professional experience. The FAQ gives mathematics, law, medicine and design as examples. This route may involve a CV, assessments and identity verification. Having an appropriate specialty is not the same as being immediately assigned to a project, and completing an assessment does not create an entitlement to ongoing assignments.

The best route is not necessarily the one with the most impressive headline. If you are new to this work, first assess whether you enjoy following precise criteria. If you have specialist knowledge, describe it accurately using non-confidential examples. Turning limited experience into an invented qualification mainly increases the risk of taking assignments whose quality you cannot confidently defend or reproduce.

What AI training tasks does Mindrift describe?

The FAQ describes three families: general tasks, domain-specific tasks and complex multi-step assignments. General examples include labeling data, rating AI-generated responses and writing simple prompts. Labeling means assigning a category or other identifying information to an item so that it can be used in a dataset. A prompt is an instruction or question addressed to an AI system, rather than a special programming language.

For domain-specific tasks, expertise can be used to evaluate material, justify reasoning or refine an output. A multi-step assignment combines several operations within one set. This classification describes the work, not the actual proportion of assignments available. Catalogues change, and these examples provide no basis for predicting how many tasks of each family will appear in your own account on a particular day.

A straightforward example is comparing two responses against stated criteria. Personal preference is not enough when the assignment asks for factual checking or documented reasoning. Identify what is being assessed: accuracy, clarity, relevance or compliance with an instruction. Our guide to data annotation work explains how this differs from simply offering an opinion and why consistency matters across repeated judgments.

Can people in France and Madagascar join Toloka or Mindrift?

The official geographic eligibility page, checked in November, does not list mainland France, Belgium or Madagascar among its explicitly excluded locations. That is useful information, not a guarantee that an account can be opened. Identity checks, residence, payment coverage and project requirements can still restrict access. Broad marketing language about contributing from anywhere should not replace the actual eligibility policy or your account’s verification outcome.

The same page lists DR Congo, Kenya, Switzerland and several French territories, including Réunion and Mayotte, as locations not currently supported for operational reasons. This is separate from the restricted-jurisdiction category. French nationality, residence in mainland France and residence in a separately listed territory are therefore not interchangeable. Your actual location matters, and the absence of one restriction does not automatically resolve every other eligibility requirement.

The published minimum age is 18, or a higher age if applicable law requires it. Individual projects may also impose language, expertise or country requirements. Do not disguise your residence with a VPN, borrow an identity or route payments through another location to evade a restriction. The policy prohibits such circumvention and describes consequences for account access and pending payments, making honest eligibility checks essential before you invest time.

In Madagascar, start with a payment route you can actually receive and the cost of connecting, then consider your preferred assignment type. An international wallet logo does not guarantee local receiving capability. Our guide to starting online work in Madagascar can help with preparation, but it cannot replace confirmation from Mindrift and your financial provider about the specific account you plan to use.

How do you apply without wasting time on qualifications?

The specialized route described in the FAQ involves an appropriate application, assessments and identity verification. The all-access route is described as registration without that same application process. Neither route supports a promise of immediate suitable work: the terms explicitly guarantee neither a minimum number of tasks nor a minimum income. Treat joining as a controlled trial rather than the start of a salaried position with scheduled hours.

A careful route from account to first payment
  1. 1
    Check location and receiving capability

Read the geographic policy and ask the provider whether your account can receive this kind of payment.

  2. 2
Recover or create the correct account

Reuse your existing account if you have one. Provide your real identity and residence.

  3. 3
    Choose an appropriate route

Select all-access tasks or a specialized application based on your skills, not an hourly headline.

  4. 4
    Read the whole assignment

Identify the reward, quality criteria, permitted tools and deadline before beginning.

  5. 5
    Track the outcome

Record submission, acceptance, fees and received payment without retaining or distributing confidential task content.

Before an assessment, set your own limit on the time you can afford to invest. Track application time, instruction reading, training and paid work separately because they serve different purposes. Passing a test may be useful, but it does not remove the possibility of waiting afterward. If an exercise is unclear, request an official clarification rather than letting another person answer it through your account or sharing restricted material outside the platform.

How much can you actually earn on Mindrift?

The official Mindrift payment guide explains that earnings depend on completed and accepted tasks. An hourly figure advertised for a project describes pricing based on expected effort; it does not necessarily equal your effective hourly earnings. Under that explanation, two contributors who take different amounts of time to complete the same accepted task receive the same task payment, even though their personal hourly outcomes differ.

For a meaningful comparison, divide the amount actually received by all the time spent on the activity. Include instructions, corrections, checks and time spent looking for tasks, not only the final submission. Then account for identifiable fees and direct expenses. This is a personal measurement method, not evidence of typical earnings across the platform, and a good result in one session does not predict the next month’s outcome.

Same money received, different time investedCalculation: hypothetical teaching example of €12 received divided by 1, 2 or 3 total hours. These are not Mindrift rates or observed earnings.
Same money received, different time invested
€/hour
1 hour€12/hour
2 hours€6/hour
3 hours€4/hour

The hypothetical €12 is not a rate advertised by the platform. It simply illustrates why less visible time changes a decision. In your own records, distinguish a displayed balance, work still under review and money actually received. Do not commit essential spending against an estimate of future assignments. The terms do not guarantee regular availability, and an account showing opportunities today is not a contractual promise of the same workload tomorrow.

Which payment methods, thresholds and dates should you check?

Mindrift advertises Payoneer or Tipalti (PayPal), with availability depending on the country of residence. Its payment guide says minimum thresholds depend on the selected provider; it does not establish one universal amount for every account. Older Toloka thresholds should therefore not be treated as current rules. A provider operating in your country also does not establish that your particular account has the receiving functions needed for these payments.

Tipalti (PayPal)Advertised payment route depending on countryPayPal receiving capability and offered route conditions

Source: Mindrift payment guide and FAQ, checked in November. Confirm individual thresholds and fees in your account.

The published earning periods run from the 1st to the 15th and from the 16th to month-end. Processing is scheduled for the 5th and 20th, adjusted for weekends and holidays. These are processing dates, not a promise that money becomes instantly spendable on those dates. A late approval, a verification issue or provider handling may require individual clarification, so keep the earning period and the actual receipt date separate in your records.

The guide states that the platform does not deduct a commission from the task rate, while warning that payment providers may charge fees. Check the full cost of reaching spendable funds in your currency, including transfer, conversion and any receiving charges. Keep payment records. Contributors are described as independent freelancers responsible for their own reporting; confirm the correct tax and registration treatment with your local authority or an appropriately qualified professional.

Rejected tasks, expired work and reviews: what are the risks?

The payment guide is explicit: a task that expires before submission is not payable, and work rejected during quality review is not payable either. Some projects may offer another attempt, but that is not universal. The economic risk is therefore not limited to a low task rate. It includes time spent producing an answer that never becomes payable, which is why you should accept only assignments you can realistically complete within their stated window.

Public reviews alone cannot establish how often a problem occurs or verify an individual dispute. Check recent feedback available on Mindrift’s Trustpilot page, distinguishing personal experiences from contractual rules. Assess testimonials individually rather than treating them as a global satisfaction measure. For rejected, expired or unpaid tasks, use the official payment guide and platform support as your reference.

For disputes, the payment guide points contributors to platform support. Prepare task references, dates, submission status and a precise explanation of the disputed issue without publicly exposing confidential content. Separate a quality rejection from a payment still within its stated schedule and from a financial receiving problem. They are different questions. A concise, documented request makes it easier to ask for the right check without claiming that support is guaranteed to reverse the outcome.

What personal data and security rules matter?

The Mindrift privacy notice describes account information, technical data and identity checks. It includes official identity documents, date of birth, geolocation and, where used in the verification process, a biometric comparison between a live photo and an identity document. The notice says that biometric processing relies on explicit consent. Declining data necessary for the service may prevent verification or payments, so read the actual flow before deciding whether to proceed.

The notice also describes recipient categories including identity, payment, infrastructure and support providers. A request for a document is therefore not enough on its own to establish whether a particular message is genuine. Verify the process from your official account. Do not send identification in a private conversation with someone promising faster acceptance, and keep your current clients’ confidential information and proprietary professional material out of your task answers.

The FAQ says some projects may involve sensitive content. Read the warnings before accepting, and do not feel obliged to continue with material that makes you uncomfortable. Check the rights and contact routes described in the privacy notice for your location. Do not assume closing an account immediately erases every record; the applicable retention obligations and purposes need to be read in the notice rather than inferred from the presence of a delete button.

Which alternatives should you compare with Toloka and Mindrift?

Compare contributor journeys rather than earnings slogans. The following links are reading options, not guarantees that those services currently accept your country or offer assignments. Use the same questions for every option: required skills, approval rules, non-guaranteed volume and a payment route you can actually receive. A service that looks attractive on paper may still be unsuitable for your banking situation or the amount of time you have available.

Our guides to Remotasks and its limitations and DataAnnotation selection and payments offer further reading. Avoid opening accounts everywhere without a method, since that can mainly multiply assessments and scatter your personal information. Identify one potentially decisive obstacle for each service and resolve it before spending several evenings on its entry process, especially when receiving payment is not yet confirmed.

Microtaches is another option for short microtasks, with instructions displayed in each task. Registration is free and limited to adults under the law of their country. The team reviews and approves each account, and a profile questionnaire must be completed. It is not an employer offering a position or salary. The number of available tasks varies by day, country and profile, so it should not be treated as guaranteed daily work.

How do Ops and Microtaches withdrawals compare?

Microtaches uses Ops as its unit. One Ops is worth €0.0042 for withdrawals and €0.0082 in the gift-card shop. These are different uses, not interchangeable cash conversion rates. A gift card is not a bank payment. Use the Ops value calculator and the available catalogue rather than comparing a points balance directly with a Mindrift task rate expressed in money, and choose the use that meets an actual need.

Two uses of a 5,000-Ops amountCalculation: Microtaches rules, 5,000 × €0.0042 and 5,000 × €0.0082. Value equivalents, not a gift-card price or confirmation that this balance alone enables a withdrawal.
Two uses of a 5,000-Ops amount
€
Withdrawal value€21
Shop value€41

The minimum withdrawal is 5,000 Ops, but a 10,000-Ops reserve cannot be withdrawn. A first minimum bank withdrawal therefore requires a 15,000-Ops balance. Identity verification becomes available from 1,000 Ops and is mandatory before the first withdrawal or shop order. Processing takes no more than 7 business days. Shop orders take no more than 2 weeks. These conditions should be considered together rather than treating the withdrawal minimum as the only barrier to receiving value.

An accepted Microtaches task must be completed within 60 minutes, with no more than 3 tasks held at once. Leaving an accepted task unanswered when time expires incurs a 20-Ops penalty. Some answers undergo manual checks before Ops are credited. These are not Mindrift rules. Evaluate each service using its own deadlines, approval process and compensation model rather than assuming that every short-task platform handles unfinished work or pending credit in the same way.

Which Microtaches withdrawal routes should you check?

Compare these routes against your actual circumstances, not just their names. Bank transfer requires an IBAN: if your bank does not issue one, check this before relying on that route. The receiving account name must match your verified identity. A listed method does not guarantee provider availability in your country; also confirm that your account can receive international or merchant payments.

Toloka review verdict: who is Mindrift useful for?

Mindrift is worth investigating if you want flexible independent activity and can accept irregular volume, quality review and project-specific criteria. The operator’s identity and payment mechanics are published. However, needing a fixed salary, lacking a confirmed local receiving route or being unable to spend time understanding instructions are sound reasons not to proceed immediately. A legitimate service can still be a poor fit for a particular person’s practical needs.

The decisive evidence for your own decision is practical: suitable assignments, accepted work, money received and a total time commitment that makes sense for you. Neither an enthusiastic testimonial nor an alarming complaint can replace that assessment. If you need actual recruitment, our guide to finding remote work separates employment searches from occasional online activities. You can pursue those goals separately without treating a task platform as an employment contract.

Verdict: test it with clear limits

Toloka now directs contributors to Mindrift. Rules are published, but neither registration nor qualification guarantees work or income.

Strengths
  • Operator identified in official terms.
  • All-access and specialized routes in one place.
  • Task pricing and payment schedule explained.
Limitations
  • Task availability and profile matching are not guaranteed.
  • Rejected and expired work can mean unpaid time.
  • Thresholds and local receiving capability need provider confirmation.
Best for: Eligible adults who can spend time on instructions and treat the activity as a variable supplement.
Does Toloka still exist separately from Mindrift?
The official Toloka contributor page says its tasks and projects, together with Toloka Annotators work, have moved to Mindrift. Follow the current official route rather than an older tutorial. This does not guarantee how every older account will behave. If you already have an account, the terms require you to reuse it; contact official support if you cannot recover access rather than registering another one.
Is Mindrift only for artificial intelligence experts?
No. The FAQ distinguishes all-access tasks, with no education or experience requirement for that category, from specialized projects requiring domain expertise. AI development experience is not a general requirement. You must still understand instructions and produce work that meets the quality criteria. Access to a category does not guarantee an immediately available assignment, and neither registration nor specialist experience establishes a reliable monthly income.
Can someone join from Madagascar?
Madagascar is not named among the explicitly excluded locations on the official geographic policy checked in November. That absence is not individual confirmation of eligibility. Identity checks, project requirements and payment-provider availability still matter. Confirm that your own account can receive the payment and check its minimum before investing substantial time in qualifications. Do not disguise your residence or use someone else’s financial account to work around a restriction.
How much does an hour on Mindrift pay?
The published rules do not establish a universal hourly wage. Mindrift explains that it pays completed and accepted tasks at the stated rate. Hourly figures for some projects reflect expected effort, not necessarily your own working time. For a personal assessment, divide money actually received by all time invested, including instructions and corrections. Do not extrapolate future monthly income from one session because future task availability is not guaranteed.
What is the minimum Mindrift payment?
The official guide says minimum thresholds depend on the chosen payment provider. It does not establish a universal amount for every country and account. Advertised routes are Payoneer or Tipalti (PayPal), depending on residence. Check the applicable threshold, fees, currency and receiving capability within your current payment setup. Do not automatically reuse a withdrawal minimum from an older Toloka article or assume that provider registration guarantees receiving access.
When does Mindrift process payments?
The published schedule provides two monthly processing runs, on the 5th and 20th, adjusted for weekends and holidays. Task periods run from the 1st to the 15th and from the 16th to month-end. Payment concerns completed and accepted tasks. Processing is not a promise of instant receipt, so check your approval status and provider handling rather than assuming money must be immediately spendable on the advertised date.
Are rejected or expired tasks paid?
The payment guide says a task that expires before submission is not payable, and work rejected in quality review is not payable either. Another attempt may be offered depending on the project, but it is not guaranteed. For a dispute, contact official support with the reference, dates and a clear explanation. Do not publish confidential task material to support your complaint or assume that a public review will resolve the payment issue.
Do you have to pay to unlock projects?
No. Mindrift says registration, assessments and task access should be free. Its official explanation rules out mandatory training purchases or other required purchases to obtain projects. A deposit request or payment to an intermediary is therefore a warning sign. This does not mean your internet connection or financial provider is free. External costs and possible provider fees need separate checking before you decide whether the activity is worthwhile.
Can you use an AI assistant to complete assignments?
Do not assume that you can. The terms provide for restrictions on automation, generative AI tools and third-party assistance, and the FAQ tells contributors to avoid generated content in training contributions. Project instructions remain essential. Copying an assignment into an outside service can also create a confidentiality issue. If the permitted tools are unclear, ask for an official clarification before using an assistant rather than treating silence as permission.
Does Microtaches use the same payment system as Mindrift?
No. Microtaches uses Ops, its own withdrawal rules and reserve, and mandatory identity verification before the first withdrawal or shop order. Payoneer is not a Microtaches withdrawal method. Microtaches bank transfers require an IBAN, and other listed routes remain subject to threshold and receiving conditions. Compare each service on its own terms rather than applying Mindrift payment arrangements to Microtaches or treating a points balance as an immediately withdrawable cash balance.
