Become a video game tester: QA jobs, pay and reality
Become a video game tester by understanding the difference between QA jobs, research playtests and free betas. Explore verified pay references and build a realistic application.

Become a video game tester is an appealing career goal, but “get paid to play” can describe very different arrangements. Ask who pays you, what you must deliver and what written agreement applies. An employment contract, a research invitation and early access to a game are not equivalent opportunities.
This guide separates verified career information and official programme rules from practical suggestions. Time-sensitive details were checked in November. Salary references concern France: they are neither international rates nor a promise for readers living in Madagascar, Cameroon or elsewhere. The English version keeps the same geographical limits rather than substituting an unrelated overseas salary.

Become a video game tester: which role do you mean?
QA means quality assurance: checking whether a product works as intended. A research playtester helps a team understand a player’s experience, including confusing instructions and frustrating moments. A beta participant tries an in-development version under the programme’s conditions. Marketing labels overlap, so the written description of your participation matters more than the label.
| What you do | What you receive | What to verify | |
|---|---|---|---|
| QA tester | Test, reproduce, document | Salary or assignment pay under contract | Employer, contract, gross pay, location |
| Research playtester | Try a game and give feedback | Study-specific reward | Type, amount, selection |
| Beta participant | Join an open or closed trial | Game access; do not assume pay | Programme terms |
| Fake opportunity | Attractive promise, suspicious request | No dependable income | Fees, impersonation, data requests |

Before applying, write down your objective: employment, occasional research participation or trying a new game. If you mainly want a small side income, our guide to earning around games offers a separate starting point. Do not list membership of a research panel as paid professional employment on your CV.
Use three screening questions: what must I deliver, how will it be assessed, and what compensation is written down? A vague answer does not prove fraud, but it is insufficient grounds for committing your time. Seek clarification before travelling, installing software or sending sensitive documents. Keep research participation and career applications in separate folders.
What does a game QA tester actually do each day?
The CIDJ profile describes repetitive defect-finding work: probing a game’s limits, recording anomalies and producing useful information. It names databases, reporting tools and image or video capture tools. What matters is what you observed and documented, not just your score or competitive ranking. Being an accomplished player does not automatically demonstrate testing skills.
The Onisep software-testing profile explains the testing cycle: prepare scenarios, run checks, analyse results and report problems. Testing continues after a fix. A regression is a problem introduced or reintroduced by a change; checking existing functionality helps establish whether fixing one issue has broken something else. This definition explains the workflow, not a promise that every workplace organises it identically.
The Onisep video about game testing discusses internal versions and updates involving new content, animations, sound, quests and accessible areas. It illustrates why testing can continue after release. It does not mean every tester has access to every tool or checks all those areas. The actual assignment should define your scope and reporting responsibilities.
For practice, imagine a save menu: go back, confirm, cancel, close it and reopen it. Write the expected result before running the scenario. This suggested exercise distinguishes “I played for hours” from “I checked a specific behaviour”. Enthusiasm becomes professionally useful when it supports a repeatable method rather than replacing one.
Game tester pay: what can actually be verified in France?
CIDJ gives the French minimum wage as the starting gross monthly reference and says testers are generally paid by assignment. Onisep lists starting pay from €2,300 gross monthly for software testers, varying with location and status. These are the exact scopes of the sources, not competing estimates of one identical job.
Those statements do not establish a game-tester range between the minimum wage and €2,300. The occupations differ, and “from” is not an upper limit. No game-specific junior-to-senior pay range was sufficiently verified for publication here. Use an identifiable vacancy and its contract to assess your own offer instead of treating a career guide as a salary quotation.
| € gross/month | |
|---|---|
| Software entry level | From €2,300 |
Compare gross with gross, then ask about working hours, currency, any bonuses and travel arrangements. There is no universal gross-to-net percentage used in this guide. For an independent assignment, ask whether the quote covers days, a deliverable or a defined testing scope. These are practical questions for reading an offer, not a new pay scale.
Which employers, contracts and conditions should you examine?
CIDJ says game testing is often outsourced to specialist studios and describes potentially insecure early career conditions. Look at QA service providers as well as the studio credited on a game. Establish the legal identity of the employer: a familiar game logo in an advert does not tell you which organisation would actually sign your contract.
For each vacancy, record the arrangement stated: permanent employment, fixed-term employment, internship, work-study placement or independent services, where specified. This is a reading checklist, not evidence of how frequently each arrangement occurs in games. The word “assignment” alone does not establish whether you would be an employee, a contractor or a research participant.
Do not infer remote eligibility from the fact that a game runs on your computer. Ask about the hiring country, permitted location, schedule, equipment and confidentiality restrictions. A remote listing is not automatically available worldwide. This guide assumes neither work authorisation nor international availability from a general programme description or a job title containing “remote”.
Finally, examine the actual scope: manual testing, text checks, compatibility checks or automation, if the listing mentions them. Automation means using scripts to run some checks. Do not assume every QA vacancy requires the same technical background. Compare the responsibilities line by line and ask which skills are needed immediately and which can be learned on the job.
What training helps you become a video game tester?
CIDJ describes game testing as accessible without a diploma, provided the candidate has good technical English and strong game knowledge. That does not mean recruitment without skills. Onisep lists bac + 2 as the minimum entry level for the broader software-testing occupation. These profiles cover different scopes, and neither guarantees a job after a particular course.
Named routes include the BTS in IT services for organisations and the BUT in computing. CIDJ also mentions the BUT in multimedia and internet professions; Onisep describes further study through master’s and engineering degrees. Choose according to the roles you want: software foundations, test design and clear writing may matter more than an attractive course title.
Before paying for training, request the syllabus, prerequisites, assessment methods and verifiable evidence behind employment claims. Separate playing exercises from quality-assurance exercises. Ask what concrete work you will be able to show at the end.
Your first assessment can be free: take an authenticated listing and highlight skills you can already demonstrate. For the gaps, find a practical exercise rather than collecting badges. If returning to education, compare your available time, budget and local options with a careers adviser. The right route depends on your circumstances, not a single supposedly compulsory school.

How do you build QA skills and a useful portfolio?
CIDJ and Onisep emphasise rigour, concentration, technical knowledge and communication. Turn those qualities into evidence with a small practice portfolio. The following is our suggested learning method, not a universal recruiter requirement: a few readable documents are more useful than a long file full of unexplained screenshots. Make your reasoning visible without overstating your experience.
- 1Understand a vacancy
Record duties, language, location and contract. Separate requirements from preferred skills.
- 2Define a check
Choose a feature in your own or an authorised project. Write the expected behaviour before testing.
- 3Document an issue
Record environment, steps, observed behaviour and useful evidence without private data.
- 4Retest and explain
Repeat the scenario; distinguish what you know from what remains uncertain. Summarise it in English too.
- 5Apply precisely
Send a tailored CV and a non-confidential public portfolio. Verify the recruiter through the employer’s website.
Include a simple test plan: feature, starting conditions, actions and expected outcomes. Add one complete report and a short note explaining what you would improve. This demonstrates information organisation. Never present a personal exercise as commissioned professional work, or a fictional issue as a genuine defect in a commercial game. Label the project and your contribution accurately.
Confidentiality comes before showcasing work. Use your own prototype, an authorised project or an explicitly fictional example. Do not publish internal versions, private conversations or screenshots from confidential research. A portfolio can explain a method without revealing an employer’s content. Seek written permission when uncertain rather than assuming that participating in a test grants publication rights.
How do you write a useful bug report?
A report should let another person understand a problem and attempt to reproduce it. “The game crashes” provides neither context nor a sequence. Separate observations, expectations and hypotheses. A screenshot can show a symptom; precise steps explain how you reached it. The following example is entirely fictional and describes no commercial game or real employer.
| Report content | |
|---|---|
| Title | Resume remains inactive after cancelling a save |
| Environment | Local prototype, demo version A, computer and controller; specify the operating system in a real report |
| Preconditions | Game running; pause menu open; no save operation underway |
| Steps | Open Save → choose Cancel → select Resume |
| Expected result | The game resumes and the menu closes |
| Observed result | The menu stays open; the button does not respond |
| Reproduction and evidence | Measure during actual testing; attach authorised capture and logs if available |
| Impact and follow-up | Progress blocked in this example; discuss priority; retest after correction |
Fictional teaching example: imaginary personal project “Test Garden”. Not a real bug or a studio-mandated template.
Impact describes the consequence for a user; priority describes the order in which a team decides to address issues. Do not confuse them. A visual flaw may be obvious without stopping play, while a lost save may matter more even if it is rare. In a real job, use the team’s categories rather than imposing your own classification system.
If an issue does not recur on every attempt, say so. Record changing conditions and avoid claiming a technical cause without evidence. As a learning exercise, ask someone who did not watch the test to read your report: can they follow the steps without asking you for missing details? That check can teach more than elaborate formatting.
Paid game playtests: what do EA and Ubisoft actually offer?
The official EA Playtesting FAQ explicitly says the programme is voluntary and is not employment. After registration and profile updates, participants may receive screening surveys. EA also describes at-home playtests. That does not establish eligibility in your country or regular invitations: you still need to check the requirements of the particular study and your own invitation.
The EA rewards FAQ describes different rewards depending on the playtest, including game rewards in some circumstances. Ask about the exact reward rather than converting it into hourly earnings or assuming you will receive the game being tested, particularly when it has not been released. Ask what your actual invitation provides.
The Ubisoft Toronto Playtest page advertises rewards and describes generally on-site sessions lasting from a few hours to several days. Participants must be able to travel to the Toronto studio at their own expense. It also describes a confidentiality agreement and possible recording. The page examined publishes no guaranteed reward amount; it is not evidence of worldwide home-based employment.
Before accepting, ask about total duration, language, equipment, the reward type, delivery conditions and confidentiality. For related but separate formats, distinguish paid product tests from mobile app testing. Our UserTesting guide discusses another service, not recruitment into a game studio. Never transfer one provider’s payment terms to another programme.
Free beta or paid work: how do you avoid false promises?
The official Steam Playtest documentation states that access through the feature is free and must not be sold. It describes a testing-access tool, not a participant pay schedule. “Free” means you do not pay for that access; it does not mean the developer pays you a salary. Without an explicit compensation agreement, budget no income from participation.
That does not make a beta pointless: you may enjoy discovering a project and watching it change. But if your objective is to meet household expenses, do not count unpaid playing time as paid work. Our separate guide to free V-Bucks offers helps examine another category of game-related promises without confusing it with professional testing.
According to Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr’s guidance on fake job adverts, fraudsters can impersonate real companies to obtain money or personal information. A familiar name or official-looking document therefore does not authenticate an offer. Find the company’s contact details independently of the message you received before proceeding. Appearance alone is not a verification method.
- Warning sign:Paying a recruiter to unlock a job or buy mandatory access.
- Warning sign:Receiving money that you must forward or use to buy equipment for someone else.
- Warning sign:Exceptional pay promised without clearly defined work.
- Warning sign:Sensitive information requested before independent recruiter verification.
- Good sign:Vacancy found on the official site and contact confirmed through an independent channel.
- Good sign:Written conditions, role and compensation understood before committing.
EA’s FAQ identifies @ea.com and @e.ea.com as its Playtesting invitation domains and recommends verification through official channels. Even when an address looks familiar, avoid following a suspicious link directly. If you have already sent money or documents, preserve evidence and follow the protective steps described by Cybermalveillance, including contacting your bank where necessary. Do not send another payment to resolve the situation.
Where should you look for genuine game tester jobs?
Start with the careers pages of identifiable studios and service providers. EA’s FAQ itself directs employment enquiries to its careers site, separate from Playtesting. France Travail and Apec can also be used as search tools, followed by confirmation with the employer.
Try several search phrases: “game QA tester”, “functional tester”, “game tester jobs” and the relevant local-language terms. Then read the duties: some results concern general software, others user research. Broad searching is useful; applications should be specific. Keep the official link, the date you checked it and the identity of the organisation recruiting for the role.
Tailor your CV around evidence you can actually supply: writing, methodical work, English and understanding systems. For a recruitment exercise, ask what may be retained or shown and follow the instructions. Do not publish the assessment afterwards. Our product tester guide explains other uses of “tester” without presenting them as equivalent to this profession.
After applying, record what you learned instead of immediately deciding you need to buy another course. A rejection does not establish a single cause. Have someone review your documents, revisit the stated requirements and continue searching for roles genuinely compatible with your residence and availability. Keep honest records of your own progress rather than inventing experience to match a listing.
Microtaches: a separate supplement, not game testing
Microtaches is a separate option for a small supplementary income: short micro-tasks with instructions displayed in each task. It is not presented here as a game-testing service or a route into a studio. The number of tasks varies by day, country and profile; regular earnings are not guaranteed. Keep it separate from your professional QA plans and research invitations.
Registration is free and restricted to adults under the rules of their country of residence. Each account is reviewed and approved by the team, and a profile questionnaire must be completed. An accepted task has a 60-minute limit, with at most 3 tasks accepted at once. Leaving an accepted task unanswered when time expires costs 20 Ops. Some answers are manually checked before credit is awarded.
Ops have different values depending on use: 1 Ops = €0.0042 for withdrawals and €0.0082 in shop value. Do not use the shop conversion to advertise withdrawable cash. The chart below is a conversion calculation, not an estimate of the time required to obtain that balance or a claim that the entire balance can immediately be withdrawn.
| € | |
|---|---|
| Withdrawal value | €4.20 |
| Shop value | €8.20 |
How should you check Microtaches withdrawals before starting?
This section concerns Microtaches only, never employer wages or playtest rewards. Bank transfer requires an account with an IBAN: check this with your bank. For every other method, also verify that the provider serves your country and supports receiving payments. Inclusion in this list does not establish your local eligibility.
| Type | Availability | Where it is used | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bank transfer (IBAN) | Bank | Available from the usual minimum | Bank account with an IBAN, in Europe or elsewhere (fixed fee outside Europe) |
| MVola | Mobile money | Available from 25,000 Ops | Madagascar |
| Orange Money | Mobile money | Available from 25,000 Ops | Madagascar, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Cameroon, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, DR Congo… |
| Wave | Mobile money | Available from 25,000 Ops | Senegal, Ivory Coast, Mali, Burkina Faso… |
| MTN MoMo | Mobile money | Available from 25,000 Ops | Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Benin, Guinea, Congo, Ghana… |
| PayPal | Online wallet | Available from 25,000 Ops | Countries where PayPal lets you receive money |
| Skrill | Online wallet | Available from 25,000 Ops | International online wallet |
| Neteller | Online wallet | Available from 25,000 Ops | International online wallet |
| Revolut | Neobank | Coming soon (no date yet) | Coming soon |
| Crypto | Cryptocurrency | Coming soon (no date yet) | Coming soon |
Methods shown on the Withdrawals page of your Microtaches account. Countries listed are examples where the service is common.
The non-withdrawable 10,000-Ops reserve sits alongside the 5,000-Ops withdrawal minimum, so a first minimum bank withdrawal requires a 15,000-Ops balance. Identity verification is compulsory before the first withdrawal or first shop order; an account opened by a minor is refused at that stage. Shop orders are processed within 2 weeks at most. None of these rules describes an employer’s payroll or a research programme’s reward system.
What is the realistic verdict on these different routes?
Choose QA if investigation, repetition and documentation genuinely interest you. Consider occasional research if you want to share feedback and accept selection without a guaranteed schedule. Choose a beta for the experience, without budgeting wages. The right choice depends on your objective and the work you are willing to deliver, not the word “tester” in an advertisement or a promise of enjoyable income.
QA calls for a professional application. Research playtests are occasional participation; beta access is not income by default.
- Concrete skills can be shown through reports
- Identifiable official research programmes
- Varied training routes described by CIDJ and Onisep
- No promised income after panel registration
- Salary references cover different occupations
- Location, contract and confidentiality require checking
- Can you become a video game tester without a degree?
- CIDJ describes possible entry to game testing without a diploma, with good technical English and strong game knowledge. That does not mean entry without skills or selection. Onisep places entry to broader software testing at bac + 2. For your application, compare the requirements of an authenticated vacancy and supply evidence of methodical work, such as a non-confidential bug report. A course title alone does not establish readiness.
- What is the starting salary for a game tester?
- For France, CIDJ gives the minimum wage as the starting gross monthly game-testing reference; this guide does not attach an updated euro amount to it. Onisep lists software-testing starting pay from €2,300 gross monthly. These scopes differ and do not form a game-specific salary range. Check contract, hours, location and status before comparing an individual offer. Neither figure is a worldwide rate or guaranteed pay.
- What is the difference between QA and research playtesting?
- QA checks functionality, reproduces faults and documents them for a team. A research playtester provides feedback on an experience under the study’s instructions. Organisers may use overlapping terminology, so read the actual conditions. EA explicitly says its Playtesting programme is voluntary and not employment. An invitation to a study therefore does not establish that you have been hired as a professional quality-assurance tester or will receive a salary.
- Does EA Playtesting pay a salary?
- EA’s FAQ explicitly states that Playtesting is not employment. Its Rewards page describes rewards that depend on the session and discusses game rewards in some circumstances. No universal cash rate was verified on those pages. Ask what your specific invitation offers before participating, and do not budget a fixed monthly income or regular invitations from registration. Reward availability should not be translated into an invented hourly wage.
- Are Ubisoft playtests available remotely worldwide?
- The Ubisoft Toronto page examined describes generally on-site sessions, with travel to the studio at the participant’s expense. It advertises rewards without publishing a guaranteed amount on that page. This does not establish worldwide remote access. Check the local programme, location, selection and reward before accepting. One studio’s description cannot automatically be extended to every Ubisoft research programme or treated as evidence of an employment opportunity.
- Does a free beta let you earn money?
- Not by default. Steam Playtest documentation describes free access that must not be sold; it does not publish a participant salary. Free access means you do not pay for that access, not that you are paid. If a separate research arrangement offers compensation, verify the written agreement. Otherwise treat participation as a game experience rather than income, and do not count those playing hours as paid employment.
- Do you need programming skills for game QA?
- Do not assume one requirement applies to all positions. Onisep describes computing study routes, while CIDJ also discusses game-testing entry without a diploma. In your search, distinguish manual responsibilities from automation duties where the listing mentions them. Ask about actual prerequisites and demonstrate what you can do. A clear bug report is a useful exercise, but it does not replace every technical skill required by a particular employer.
- What belongs in a beginner testing portfolio?
- Our suggested practice portfolio contains a short test plan, a readable report and an explanation of the checks performed. This is a learning method, not a universal application requirement. Use a personal project, authorised material or a clearly labelled fictional example. Do not publish internal screenshots or documents covered by confidentiality agreements. Show the reasoning behind your observations rather than accumulating files without context or overstating professional experience.
- How do you recognise a fake tester vacancy?
- Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr warns that fraudsters may impersonate businesses to obtain money or personal information. Verify the recruiter through an official channel found independently of the message. Do not pay to unlock a job or forward money you have received. Exceptional promises and unclear conditions justify stopping to investigate. If harm has occurred, preserve evidence and follow the organisation’s protective guidance, including contacting your bank where necessary.
- Does Microtaches provide a route into game testing?
- Microtaches is not presented here as game testing or QA recruitment. It is a separate supplement involving short micro-tasks with instructions displayed in each task. Registration is free for adults, every account is reviewed and the profile must be completed. Tasks vary by day, country and profile. Ops and withdrawal conditions are separate from a salary, so do not treat this option as a professional testing contract or guaranteed income.
