Student jobs in Belgium online: legit options, hours and rules

Finding student jobs in Belgium online starts with one important distinction: employee wages and platform income do not follow the same rules. This guide helps you compare realistic options, track your hours, understand benefits and taxes, and decide whether Microtaches fits your schedule and budget.

Student jobs in Belgium online: legit options, hours and rules

Looking for student jobs in Belgium online that fit around classes, exams, and commuting? Remote work can remove a trip from your day and make scheduling easier. But a listing labeled “work-from-home student job” does not automatically come with a student employment contract, flexible hours, or regular work. Before comparing opportunities, find out what agreement you would actually be signing.

The biggest source of confusion is treating Student at work hours, child benefits, and tax thresholds as one system. They answer different questions. This guide separates them, then shows you how to evaluate online options and prepare your paperwork. For a broader starting point, explore our guide to making money as a student.

These figures do not add together or replace one another. Hours concern social security contributions. Net resources are part of a tax calculation. Community size shows a local presence, not a likely income. To make a useful decision, examine your contract, the regional benefits rules that apply to you, and the nature of each income stream separately.

What counts as an online student job in Belgium?

A remote position can be a genuine student employee job. According to FPS Employment, a student employment contract is intended for someone whose main activity is studying and whose work is secondary. It involves paid work under an employer’s authority. Working from your bedroom rather than an office does not replace those criteria.

By contrast, tutoring on your own account or accepting independent assignments through a platform does not automatically make you a student employee. “Student job” may simply mean an opportunity marketed to students. Ask which contract applies, who organizes the work, and what payment documents you will receive. Keep the answers with the agreement so you can explain the arrangement later if needed.

FPS Employment states that student employment contract rules do not impose a maximum age. That is separate from age-related conditions for child benefits or student self-employed status. For any remote offer, also clarify the schedule, required equipment, compensation, and how the arrangement can end. A clear explanation of working conditions is more useful than a broad claim that the role is “flexible.”

Which online student jobs in Belgium are worth exploring?

Tutoring: put a subject you know well to use

Tutoring is worth considering if you can explain a subject clearly and keep scheduled appointments. My Sherpa’s official “Become a coach” page says it recruits students, among others, for online private tutoring throughout Belgium. Check the contract and compensation for each opportunity rather than assuming it is student employment. Also ask about preparation: the lesson itself may not represent all the time you spend working.

Writing: an option for confident writers

Paid writing involves understanding a brief, researching information, and delivering a polished text. Textbroker’s official author page describes paid assignments for articles, blog content, and product descriptions. Current admission for Belgian residents remains to be checked on its official website. Our beginner’s guide to paid online writing can help you prepare samples and assess an assignment. Look at the requested revisions and deadline before accepting.

Microtasks: short opportunities, not a guaranteed schedule

Microtasks involve short tasks with displayed instructions. Their availability varies by day, country, and profile. Clickworker describes its microjobs as independent work, and its official help center explains that country registrations may temporarily close. Current access from Belgium therefore needs checking. Start with our guide to what microtasks are, then examine each platform’s eligibility and payment conditions before committing your time.

Surveys and studies: occasional participation

Ipsos iSay Belgium’s official terms require Belgian residence and a minimum age of 16. Prolific’s official help center lists Belgium as an accepted country and requires participants to be at least 18. Eligibility does not guarantee regular invitations. Use our guide to legitimate paid surveys to compare rewards, payout thresholds, and requested data. Treat participation as an occasional option rather than a scheduled employee wage.

How does the 650-hour Student at work allowance work?

According to Student at work, the NSSO service, Belgium’s student allowance has been 650 hours per calendar year since 2025. NSSO is Belgium’s national social security office. The counter restarts at the beginning of each calendar year. My Student at work lets you check remaining hours and download a student-worker certificate. Check it before agreeing to additional shifts, particularly with several employers.

Within the allowance, Student at work lists a personal contribution of 2.71%, compared with its stated ordinary rate of 13.07%. These percentages alone do not determine your final take-home pay. The chart below compares only those personal contribution rates. When reviewing an offer, ask about the proposed compensation and applicable conditions rather than calculating your budget from this comparison alone.

Personal contribution: student allowance and standard rateSource: NSSO (ONSS) — Student at work, checked in November. These are personal contribution rates, not total deductions or final take-home pay.

You are allowed to exceed the allowance. Student at work says ordinary contributions apply to the additional hours. If you remain a student, a student employment contract is still required; it does not disappear when the counter reaches zero. However, permission to work more is not confirmation that your family benefits remain unaffected. Review those rules before adding hours, not after the work is completed.

Can working online affect your child benefits?

Yes, even when you work from home. The applicable regional system and your type of activity matter. In Brussels, Famiris states that exceeding 240 working hours in a quarter means losing child benefits for the entire quarter. The limit does not apply in the third quarter if you continue studying after the summer holidays.

In Wallonia, FAMIWAL says the 650 annual student hours covered by the NSSO allowance do not affect child-benefit payments. Beyond that allowance, its “You work” page provides an additional allowance of 240 hours per quarter. It also states that self-employment as a main occupation ends payments. Do not assume that a rule protecting employee work applies in the same way to independent activity.

In Flanders, Vlaanderen.be describes a combination for students aged 18 to 25: 650 annual reduced-contribution hours plus up to 80 monthly hours with ordinary contributions. Hours beyond the student allowance enter that monthly counter. Exceeding the ordinary-work limit removes entitlement to the Groeipakket, Flanders’ child-benefit system, for the affected month. Keep the annual and monthly records separate when planning additional work.

Sources: Famiris — My child works; FAMIWAL — You work; Vlaanderen.be — Keeping the Flemish Groeipakket while working and studying, checked in November. Annual, quarterly, and monthly counters are not interchangeable.

For the German-speaking Community, Ostbelgien Familie identifies a threshold of 175 hours per quarter for certain employed or self-employed activities, excluding permitted activities. Student self-employed status is among the permitted activities, but confirm the complete exceptions with the relevant service. Before combining arrangements, send your benefits provider details of your status and schedule. Simply saying you “work on a platform” is not enough to assess the situation.

How much can you earn while remaining your parents’ tax dependent?

FPS Finance — Dependent children publishes a ceiling of €12,300 in net tax resources for the current income year, checked in November. This concerns whether your parents can claim you as a dependent child, with other conditions still required. It is neither your gross salary nor the take-home amount deposited into your bank account.

Net tax resources are calculated under specific rules, including applicable income exclusions and expenses. Adding up bank transfers is therefore not enough. If you combine student wages, platform payments, and other resources, keep a separate record for each category. That makes it easier to apply the correct calculation instead of extending an exclusion to income it does not cover.

For 2025 income, FPS Finance’s “Net resources” guidance confirms an excluded first portion of €6,840 for specified student income, including student-contract earnings and student self-employment income. Do not automatically carry that amount into the current income year. Check the applicable exclusion on the official website before trying to convert the net-resources ceiling into a salary figure.

Remaining your parents’ dependent and owing no personal income tax are separate questions. Check the applicable tax-free salary threshold with FPS Finance using all your income categories; a salary-only figure may not answer your situation. If you are approaching a limit, request an estimate before accepting more work. That gives you time to understand the consequences for both your own budget and your parents’ tax position.

How do you declare platform income in Belgium?

Start with the income category, not a tax code found in a discussion thread. FPS Finance’s student guidance states that a personal tax return is required from age 18, even without income. Its tax-return guidance also says a correct and complete simplified return proposal requires no further action. If payments are missing or information is wrong, the proposal must be corrected.

The sharing-economy regime is not automatic

FPS Finance says this regime concerns services between private individuals, outside professional activity, through an approved platform. “Approved” means officially recognized for that regime. Its guidance on sharing-economy income publishes a ceiling of €7,890 for the current income year, checked in November. That is not a general tax exemption, and platform approval does not automatically establish your eligibility.

When the conditions are met, FPS Finance provides a 50% flat-rate expense deduction: half the income is deducted without calculating actual expenses. The remainder is taxed separately at 20%, unless combining it with other income is more favorable. Tax form 281.29 distinguishes gross income from withholding, tax retained at payment. Report the gross amount under codes 1460/2460 and the withholding under 1461/2461, in part 2, section XV.

If the regime is unclear, confirm your individual case

Do not automatically use those codes for every microtask or survey payment. Outside the approved regime, classification depends on the circumstances; there is no universal code or rate for all such income. Keep terms, statements, and expense records, then ask FPS Finance or a professional for confirmation. Our microjob platform comparison explains how sites operate, not which Belgian tax rules apply to you.

  1. 1
    Gather your documents

Keep contracts, tax forms, platform statements, payment records, and expense receipts. Save the terms that applied to your activity so you can explain the arrangement.

  2. 2
    Separate your income categories

Distinguish student wages, self-employment, and other platform income. Do not group everything together simply because the work happened online.

  3. 3
    Confirm the applicable regime

For sharing-economy income, check platform approval and the conditions of your services. Otherwise, confirm the appropriate classification before choosing a return section.

  4. 4
    Review your return

In MyMinfin, compare the proposed information with your records. Correct an incomplete or inaccurate simplified proposal using the official procedure.

  5. 5
    Check the family budget too

Separately review net resources for dependent status and your child-benefit provider’s conditions. Your personal tax return does not settle those questions by itself.

When should you apply for student self-employed status?

If you are organizing work on your own account, contact a social insurance fund rather than assuming your student ID is enough. INASTI, Belgium’s self-employed social security institute, states that student self-employed status is requested through a fund. The fund checks eligibility and the necessary steps. Social status, tax obligations, and child benefits remain separate issues even when all the work happens at home.

The INASTI contribution schedule, checked in November, provides no social security contributions below €8,687.04 in annual income. From that threshold to below €17,374.08, reduced contributions are calculated on income exceeding the first threshold. At €17,374.08 or more, contributions apply as for self-employment in a main occupation.

These are income-band boundaries, not turnover ceilings or exemptions from reporting income. Ask the fund which income basis to use and how to report changes. INASTI’s guidance on changes to student self-employed status says it may continue beyond the third quarter of the year you turn 25 if you already held it in that quarter and continuously meet the conditions. Older summaries may therefore be misleading.

Consider how you organize the activity: recurring services, seeking assignments, repeated commitments, and structured work are good reasons to discuss your situation with the fund. A small amount alone does not create a universal exemption from needing a status. If you are unsure whether an opportunity is employment or independent work, clarify that before spending time building an account or preparing an application.

Where does Microtaches fit alongside a Belgian student job?

Microtaches can be considered a supplement, not a dependable replacement for a student employment contract. It offers short tasks with displayed instructions. Availability varies by day, country, and profile. Internal figures show about 500 approved workers in Belgium, checked in November. They do not establish how many are students, how many are active, or what any individual earns.

Registration is free, and every account is approved by the team. A mandatory profile questionnaire provides a 10 Ops bonus when completed. Ops are Microtaches’ earnings unit. Responses are checked manually or automatically before Ops are credited, and careless responses can be rejected. Read the displayed instructions before accepting: having spare time does not replace the attention needed to submit a valid response.

This format may suit genuinely free periods in your schedule, but review withdrawal conditions first. Your initial Ops are not immediately available as cash. If you need money for an urgent expense or are looking for regular compensation, prioritize an offer whose contract, schedule, and payment arrangements match that need. Flexible access and predictable payments are not the same thing.

Opening an account does not automatically assign you a Belgian tax regime. Confirm how the income should be treated in your circumstances. Our identity verification guide explains the documents needed before a payment request. Reviewing those requirements early helps you decide whether the platform fits your needs rather than discovering an important condition after accumulating Ops.

Our take: consider it a supplement, not a salary to budget around

Microtaches may suit a student with free time who is comfortable following instructions. Its thresholds, reserve, and payment timelines must fit the student’s budget. The Belgian tax treatment needs individual confirmation.

Strengths
  • Free registration.
  • Short tasks with displayed instructions.
  • Known Ops conversion rates.
  • Bank transfers available under the withdrawal conditions.
Limitations
  • Variable task availability.
  • A non-withdrawable reserve to build.
  • Identity verification required before payment.
  • Payment timelines unsuitable for immediate needs.
Best for: Students seeking an occasional supplement who do not need to rely on a specific amount or payment date.

How do Microtaches withdrawals work in Belgium?

For withdrawals, 1 Ops equals €0.0042. The minimum withdrawal is 5,000 Ops, worth €21, but a reserve of 10,000 Ops cannot be withdrawn. Your balance must therefore reach 15,000 Ops for a first withdrawal of 5,000 Ops. Although that balance has a €63 conversion value, it does not mean €63 is immediately withdrawable: the reserve stays in your account.

Bank transfers are available from the minimum withdrawal, subject to the other conditions, using your IBAN, the international identifier for your bank account. The fixed 800 Ops fee concerns transfers outside Europe, not a Belgian transfer simply because of its destination. PayPal, Skrill, and Neteller are available from 25,000 Ops. Revolut and Crypto are listed as coming soon without a date, so do not treat them as current options.

Methods shown on the Withdrawals page of your Microtaches account. Countries listed are examples where the service is common.

The receiving account must be in your name, matching your verified identity document. Identity verification becomes accessible at a balance of 1,000 Ops and requires an identity document plus proof of address. It is processed within a maximum of 7 business days and is mandatory before your first withdrawal or first shop order. Prepare those documents through the official process rather than using someone else’s payment account.

A withdrawal may take up to 3 weeks after the request is validated. In the shop, 1 Ops equals €0.0082, so 1,000 Ops represents €8.20 in gift-card value, not cash in your bank account. Shop orders may take up to 2 weeks. Microtaches also has an internal withdrawal cap of €2,500 per year per worker; it is not a Belgian tax exemption.

How can you find legitimate work without disrupting your studies?

Choose an opportunity whose status, compensation, schedule, validation, and payment process you can explain clearly. Check the country requirements too: a French-language listing or accessible website does not prove Belgian residents can participate. Before submitting documents, verify the official domain and why the information is needed. Our guide to personal data protection and platform security explains useful checks.

On Microtaches, an accepted task must be completed within 60 minutes, with no more than 3 tasks in progress. You can abandon a task without a penalty within 10 minutes of acceptance. If it expires without a response, 20 Ops are deducted. Accept only when you have enough time. A genuinely free period between classes is better than an interruption whose length you cannot control.

To spot scams, focus on what you are being asked to do. Paying fees, recharging an account, or making a deposit to unlock earnings are warning signs. Refuse requests for a secret code or SMS code, and requests to move work off the platform through WhatsApp or Telegram. Claimed urgency should never prevent you from checking the arrangement before sending money or sensitive information.

If you are an international student, also check your right to work according to your residence situation and origin. Student at work has official guidance for foreign students, whose circumstances do not all follow identical rules. The annual allowance does not replace conditions attached to your residence permit. Independent online activity also needs separate consideration rather than being assumed to follow employee-work rules.

What else should you know about online student jobs in Belgium?

These questions often come up before signing an agreement or receiving a payment. Keep the same checking order: work status, social security contributions, child benefits, then taxes.

How many hours can I work as a student in Belgium?
Student at work confirms an allowance of 650 hours per calendar year with reduced social security contributions. You may work more, with ordinary contributions applying to additional hours. The allowance is not a general prohibition on further work. Check child benefits and your tax situation separately, especially when combining employers or different activities.
Can I keep my student contract after using all 650 hours?
Yes, if you remain a student. Student at work states that a student employment contract is still required after the allowance is exhausted. Reduced contributions stop applying to the additional hours; the student contract does not automatically end. You should then check how the extra work affects the child-benefit rules applicable to you.
How can I check my remaining Student at work hours?
According to the NSSO, My Student at work lets you view your remaining hours and download a student-worker certificate. Check before agreeing to additional work, particularly if you have several employers. That balance concerns the social security allowance. It does not tell you whether your tax thresholds or regional child-benefit conditions are satisfied.
Does an online job also require a student employment contract?
Remote employee work follows student employment contract rules when the relevant conditions are met. FPS Employment says studying must be your main activity and the work must be performed under an employer’s authority. Independent activity or platform participation does not acquire employee status simply because you are a student or work online.
Do microtasks and surveys count toward the 650 hours?
Not automatically. The allowance concerns student employee work covered by the NSSO regime. An activity without a student employment contract does not become student employment because it happens online. Check the contractual framework and confirm the income classification. Not appearing in the Student at work counter does not mean the activity has no obligations.
How much can I earn while remaining my parents’ tax dependent?
FPS Finance publishes a ceiling of €12,300 in net tax resources for the current income year, checked in November. Other dependent-child conditions still apply. This is not the take-home salary deposited into your bank account. Applicable exclusions, expenses, and other resources affect the calculation, so keep your different income categories separate.
Does staying below 650 hours protect my child benefits?
No, that would be an unreliable guarantee. The rules are regional. Brussels’ Famiris uses a quarterly assessment with a conditional summer exception. FAMIWAL distinguishes NSSO allowance hours from certain additional hours. Flanders’ Groeipakket also uses a monthly ordinary-work counter. Confirm the system and conditions that apply to you with your benefits provider.
Do all platforms qualify for the sharing-economy tax regime?
No. FPS Finance says the regime covers services between private individuals through an approved platform, outside professional activity. Approval alone does not establish every user’s eligibility. The published ceiling is not a universal exemption. Confirm that your income actually qualifies before using the regime’s tax-return codes or assuming its treatment applies.
How should I declare Microtaches income in Belgium?
Keep the activity conditions, earnings statements, and payment records, then confirm the appropriate classification with FPS Finance or a professional. There is no universal Belgian tax code established for every type of microtask income. Microtaches’ internal withdrawal cap does not replace Belgian tax rules or determine how your income should be reported.
When can I request my first Microtaches withdrawal?
The minimum withdrawal is 5,000 Ops, but a 10,000 Ops reserve remains non-withdrawable. You therefore need a balance of 15,000 Ops for a first withdrawal of 5,000 Ops. Your identity must be verified, and the receiving account must be in your name. Payment may take up to 3 weeks after validation.
