Self-employed as a side activity in Belgium: online income guide
Being self-employed as a side activity in Belgium may apply to online work, but small earnings do not settle every obligation. Understand the conditions, paperwork and questions to confirm.

Being self-employed as a side activity in Belgium is not a category reserved for shops or tradespeople. Online income raises the same underlying questions: what kind of activity are you carrying out, and what social protection do you already have? ‘Side activity’ describes your position within the social security system, not an amount you can earn without paperwork.
This guide is for people who need to consider Belgian rules. It does not import the French micro-entrepreneur system or another country’s exemptions. If you live abroad, work across borders or have a cross-border employment arrangement, first establish which legislation applies. Our guide to Belgian supplementary income and tax provides the broader tax context.

What does self-employed as a side activity in Belgium mean?
INASTI defines a side activity through its relationship with another professional occupation or, under conditions, replacement income. You may run an independent activity while remaining employed. Neither the platform, the length of an individual task nor the name on your account determines this status: your wider employment circumstances need to be assessed.
INASTI states that the legal obligations are the same as for a main-activity self-employed person. ‘Side activity’ therefore does not mean ‘informal’. Modest work may require affiliation and administrative steps even if low income ultimately means no social contributions are due. The order matters: establish the correct framework first, then apply the contribution rules belonging to that framework.
Social status and legal structure also need separating. A sole proprietorship and a company are ways of organising a business; main or side activity concerns social security. An internet-based income does not, by itself, require incorporating a company. Ask a business counter which steps fit your actual project, rather than buying a more complicated setup before understanding why it would be necessary.
Who can combine employment with a self-employed side activity?
For an employee, INASTI requires at least half-time employment. Monthly working hours must reach at least half those of a full-time employee in the same business or sector. This test concerns your main occupation: doing only a few hours of independent work does not, on its own, make that work a qualifying side activity.
According to that page, appointed statutory teachers need at least six tenths of a full timetable, while contract teachers need half a timetable. Civil servants have additional conditions concerning service duration and working hours. Do not replace this assessment with a rule heard from a colleague: give the fund your exact employment category and schedule, especially when your contract or hours fluctuate. For the civil servants concerned, INASTI specifies at least eight months or 200 days per year and monthly hours of at least half-time. A statutory teacher working half-time but below six-tenths may request assimilation under Article 37, subject to income conditions. A reduction in hours, a break from work or the end of a contract calls for a fresh check. Your classification is not permanently secured by initial registration. INASTI requires professional changes to be reported to your fund. Students need a separate assessment of student self-employment: our guide to online student work in Belgium helps frame the questions without treating an online platform as a student employer.
Does a small online income automatically require this status?
Have your social insurance fund and SPF Finances classify your small online earnings before applying a status or exemption. Start by describing the work, its frequency, its organisation and its contractual framework. Then ask the relevant bodies to assess it. The number of bank withdrawals alone does not describe the underlying activity.
SPF Finances distinguishes regular work from occasional services in its influencer guidance. This official example explains why the nature of an activity matters, but it is not an automatic classification scale for every micro-task. Do not transfer a profession-specific treatment to your situation without confirmation. Tax classification and social security classification each need their own assessment.
To obtain a useful answer, prepare a factual description instead of an abstract question about ‘a few euros’. Explain whether you intend to continue, how you organise your time and what payment evidence will be available. Keep the reply together with the documents you supplied. This approach does not create an exemption; it helps prevent an organisation from answering a question based on circumstances different from yours.
Which steps should you take before starting?
INASTI requires affiliation with a social insurance fund before starting independent work. The fund handles your social security file and contributions; a business counter handles business registration formalities. SPF Finances deals with income tax and VAT. These organisations have different roles: registering with one does not automatically settle every question handled by the others. INASTI also requires joining a health insurance fund at the same time as the social insurance fund.
- 1Describe the project
Prepare your main employment status, hours, online payment arrangements and a realistic estimate of receipts and expenses.
- 2Confirm your social classification
Ask the fund about side-activity eligibility, supporting evidence and provisional contributions. Check benefit compatibility before working if you receive benefits.
- 3Arrange business formalities
With a business counter, check registration in the Crossroads Bank for Enterprises and activity-specific steps. Clarify VAT treatment with SPF Finances or your adviser.
- 4Affiliate and keep evidence
Join the social insurance fund before starting independent work. Archive confirmations, registration documents, payment terms and statements.
- 5Review your file
Report changes to your main employment and update estimates with the fund. Prepare your income-tax return as a separate exercise.
Belgium.be lists the main business creation steps, including legal structure, a dedicated current account, VAT identification and social affiliation. Not every formality on that list applies to every project: an individual working without staff has different needs from a company employing people. Request a tailored list, with charges and recurring obligations explained before you pay.
Avoid choosing a provider solely because an advertisement promises fast registration. Accuracy matters more than speed. Establish who will complete each step, which documents are missing and what remains your responsibility afterwards. Keep a readable copy of every confirmation: when earnings are modest, an organised file helps keep the administration from becoming larger than the activity itself.
What social contribution thresholds apply to a side activity?
The thresholds below are those displayed by INASTI, checked in November. They concern annual professional income and are indexed. They are not withdrawal limits, monthly amounts or general income-tax exemptions. For another period, particularly when starting partway through a period, ask the fund for the calculation applicable to your file rather than improvising a proportional calculation.
| Annual professional income | Social contribution treatment | |
|---|---|---|
| Below the lower threshold | Less than €1,922.16 | No social contributions |
| Intermediate band | €1,922.16 to below €17,374.08 | Reduced contributions |
| From the upper threshold | €17,374.08 or more | Contributions at main-activity level |
Source: INASTI, Self-employed side activity, checked in November. Indexed annual thresholds; check management fees with the fund.
The base described by INASTI is gross professional income reduced by professional expenses and professional losses, as established by the tax administration. Do not confuse it with turnover or a wallet balance. ‘Net’ can mean different things in a platform statement, a bank account and a tax document: always ask which definition a figure uses.
Below the lower threshold, having no contributions due does not remove the status’s other obligations. At the upper threshold, contributing at main-activity level does not, in itself, end your salaried job or create a different business. This table describes contribution treatment. Its effects on rights and overlapping entitlements must be assessed against your full circumstances, not inferred from a single row.
How do provisional contributions and later adjustments work?
INASTI explains that final contributions depend on income for the relevant period, but the tax administration only establishes that income later. Provisional contributions are therefore paid first and adjusted once the fund receives the income figures. A low provisional bill does not guarantee a low final bill. Keep a cash reserve separate from the money you consider available for everyday spending.
For an established self-employed person, the provisional reference generally uses income from three years earlier; statutory provisional amounts apply when starting out. The fund may consider a reduction supported by objective evidence and subject to its agreement. If actual income exceeds the reduced basis, INASTI warns that an additional bill and increases can follow. Do not reduce payments yourself simply because one month was quieter.

|---|---|
| Hypothetical receipts | €3,000 |
| Hypothetical expenses | €600 |
| Before contributions | €2,400 |
This chart is neither an earnings forecast nor a contribution calculation. It suggests useful tracking columns: receipts, documented expenses, confirmed assessment basis, provisional payments and expected adjustment. According to INASTI, fund management fees are added to contributions; request the actual breakdown rather than assuming a universal percentage. Our guide to supplementary income for self-employed workers helps organise that tracking without promising returns.

How do income tax, VAT and social contributions differ?
Social contributions fund social security; income tax applies to income according to its classification; VAT concerns the treatment of certain economic transactions. Having no contributions due is therefore not proof that income is tax-free. Likewise, a possible VAT exemption scheme does not mean exemption from income tax. Keep these three files separate and confirm each answer with the body responsible for it.
The SPF Finances influencer page illustrates this separation: regular services may create VAT obligations, and a possible exemption scheme does not remove identification requirements. That does not establish identical VAT treatment for every platform income. For your own activity, explain who pays, for what service and in which country, then ask whether identification is required and which obligations remain applicable.

In Tax-on-web, do not choose a box simply because it appears advantageous or another user selected it. Prepare your statements and ask which category matches your activity. A personal tracking spreadsheet helps the discussion but does not determine the law. Our tax information page offers orientation; official clarification is still needed for an individual case.
How does the collaborative economy differ from self-employment?
The collaborative economy regime described by SPF Finances concerns services between private individuals, outside professional activity, through an approved platform. Simply working online does not qualify you. The authority also explains that platform approval alone does not guarantee the special treatment for every user. Your service and personal circumstances must meet the conditions too.
| Self-employed side activity | Qualifying collaborative economy | |
|---|---|---|
| Underlying framework | Independent professional activity alongside a qualifying main situation | Services between individuals outside professional activity |
| Approved platform | Does not determine social status by itself | Approval required, but not sufficient alone |
| Contributions | INASTI rules according to income | No social contributions for activities meeting regime conditions |
| Income tax | Classification and reporting to confirm | Special miscellaneous-income treatment if conditions are met |

The ceiling displayed for income in the current income period is €7,890, checked in November on the SPF Finances page. It includes income from association work in the combined total. It is not a general tax-free allowance for all online platforms. Check the relevant income period when filing: the official page also displays the previous period’s amount, which must not be mixed with this one.
Subject to the conditions, SPF Finances describes a 50% flat-rate expense deduction followed by a separate 20% rate on the remaining base, with aggregate taxation if more favourable. Before applying that mechanism to Microtaches, check its Belgian approval with SPF Finances. Check the official approved-platform list and seek classification of your own income rather than adopting a rate quoted in an online conversation.
Can you combine unemployment benefits and a self-employed side activity?
Combining work with benefits needs a separate assessment. CAPAC describes the Tremplin-indépendants scheme, which may, subject to conditions, allow someone to start or continue an independent side activity while retaining unemployment benefits for up to twelve months. Application requirements and individual eligibility matter: describing yourself as a side-activity worker does not automatically preserve every benefit entitlement.
CAPAC says claimants must remain available for the labour market and that income from the activity may reduce benefits. Other conditions concern previous work and earlier use of the scheme. Request a calculation of your remaining benefit and confirmation from your payment body before starting. Low income is not implicit permission to carry out the activity.
If your circumstances are changing, prepare a timeline first: employment start or end, benefit period, proposed activity and intended starting date. This helps different bodies assess the same facts. Do not wait for a request for evidence before reconstructing dates. For a comparison that keeps the frameworks distinct, see our guide to Belgian supplementary-income statuses.
Which social rights does this status provide?
According to INASTI, a side activity with no contributions or reduced contributions does not build additional social rights in the self-employed system. You retain the rights attached to your main occupation. Do not therefore treat a small independent activity as replacement protection if your salaried job ends. Report that change and promptly ask what happens to your affiliation and coverage.
Paying contributions at main-activity level can in principle build the same independent rights as a main-activity self-employed worker, but INASTI highlights specific rules on overlapping entitlements. Voluntarily paying more does not create those rights by itself. Pension rights therefore cannot be inferred from a payment total alone: ask what your actual contribution category means before making long-term budgeting decisions.
When income is uncertain, the practical issue is not confusing flexibility with security. You can allocate limited time to testing your organisation, but monitoring your main status remains essential. Put contract changes and working-hour changes in your calendar. A review should consider more than receipts: include administration time, confirmed costs and obligations still to be completed.
Side-activity status can fit independent work alongside a qualifying main situation. It does not make every small payment informal.
- Allows a project to be considered without necessarily leaving a main job.
- Contribution treatment reflects income within INASTI’s defined bands.
- Formalities and ongoing monitoring remain necessary.
- No additional social rights where contributions are absent or reduced.
Microtaches income: withdrawals and Belgian status
Microtaches is one supplementary option, not an employer, salary or flexi-job. The official table below describes listed withdrawal methods: it does not determine your Belgian status. Also check that the payment provider serves your country and that your account can receive the payment.

Methods shown on the Withdrawals page of your Microtaches account. Countries listed are examples where the service is common.
Registration is free and restricted to adults under the rules of their country of residence. Each account is reviewed and approved by the team, and the profile questionnaire must be completed. Microtaches offers short micro-tasks with instructions displayed in each task. Availability varies by day, country and profile: neither task numbers nor earnings can be guaranteed to cover fixed costs.
An accepted task must be completed within 60 minutes, with no more than three tasks at once. An accepted task left unanswered when its time expires incurs a 20-Ops penalty. Some answers are manually checked before crediting. To keep supplementary work compatible with your main occupation, accept a task only when you can actually follow its instructions and finish within the time allowed.
| € | |
|---|---|
| Withdrawal value | €4.20 |
| Shop value | €8.20 |
The minimum withdrawal is 5,000 Ops, with a non-withdrawable reserve of 10,000 Ops: a first minimum bank withdrawal therefore requires a 15,000-Ops balance. Bank transfer requires an account with an IBAN. Shop value concerns gift cards, not a higher bank conversion rate. See our guide to KYC and account validation; identity verification is mandatory before the first withdrawal or shop order.
The internal €2,500 annual cap is neither a Belgian tax allowance nor an exemption from social affiliation. Keep Ops statements, withdrawal records and shop orders, then ask how to document and classify them for your file. Do not assume that receiving a gift card removes the tax question. Shop orders are processed within two weeks at most; that timing does not determine income classification either.
What checklist helps avoid costly mistakes?
Before starting regular independent activity, gather the answers in one file. A checklist identifies gaps; it does not replace an administrative decision. If something remains uncertain, identify the missing answer precisely: main status, income classification, VAT or benefit compatibility. A focused question supported by documents is more useful than a general request for permission to earn something on the side.
- Good sign:Have the fund confirm that your main occupation meets the conditions.
- Good sign:Separate receipts, expenses, professional income and withdrawn amounts.
- Good sign:Check affiliation, VAT and tax reporting separately.
- Good sign:Check compatibility in advance if you receive benefits.
- Good sign:Keep statements and report employment changes.
- Warning sign:Assume that a small withdrawal or gift card makes income invisible.
- Warning sign:Pay someone promising a guaranteed exemption without knowing your file.
When choosing supplementary work, also consider payment conditions and the time you can realistically commit. A fixed-date cash requirement should not depend on variable task availability. Compare options and reject requests for money to ‘unlock’ guaranteed earnings. Our guide to serious home-based work without upfront payments provides practical caution points.
The useful habit is not searching online for the highest threshold: it is identifying which rule answers your question. A social threshold concerns contributions, a collaborative-economy ceiling belongs to a specific regime and a platform limit concerns that platform’s operation. Once those boundaries are clear, you can speak more confidently with the fund and SPF Finances and decide whether the proposed activity still makes sense for you.
- How much can a side-activity worker earn without social contributions?
- INASTI states that no contributions are due below €1,922.16 in annual professional income, checked in November. Reduced contributions apply from that threshold to below €17,374.08; contributions at main-activity level apply from the upper threshold. These figures are indexed. They do not remove applicable affiliation requirements or income-tax questions. Ask the fund to calculate the treatment for your actual activity period rather than treating the thresholds as general tax-free allowances.
- Do you need a full-time job to qualify for side-activity status?
- No. For employees, INASTI requires at least half-time work, assessed against full-time hours in the same business or sector. Teachers and civil servants have specific conditions. The size of your online income does not replace this main-occupation requirement. Have your fund check your contract, hours and any interruptions before relying on side-activity classification. A later change in employment also needs to be reported and assessed.
- Do occasional micro-tasks automatically require self-employed side-activity status?
- Not automatically: the activity needs classification and your main situation needs assessment. Ask SPF Finances and your social insurance fund which obligations apply to your small online earnings. Describe frequency, organisation and payment arrangements to the fund and SPF Finances. Do not assume that an occasional-income tax classification also settles the social security question. Keep replies that address your actual circumstances rather than relying on another user’s experience.
- Is the Microtaches annual cap a Belgian tax exemption?
- No. Microtaches’ €2,500 annual cap is an internal platform rule. It does not create a Belgian tax allowance or determine self-employed side-activity status. Social contributions, income tax and VAT each need assessment under their own rules. Keep earnings and withdrawal statements and ask how they should be documented in your case. A small payment alone is not enough to conclude that no reporting or registration obligations apply.
- Can you keep unemployment benefits while running a side activity?
- A combination may be possible under conditions, including the Tremplin-indépendants scheme described by CAPAC, for up to twelve months. Check eligibility and procedures with your payment body and ONEM before starting. Activity income can reduce benefits, and availability for the labour market remains a condition. Affiliation with a social insurance fund is not, by itself, permission to retain all unemployment payments. Get clarification based on your personal file.
- Must you affiliate if expected income is very low?
- If the work falls within self-employed status, INASTI requires affiliation with a social insurance fund before it starts. Low income may subsequently mean no contributions are due under the side-activity rules, without removing other obligations. Do not confuse a contribution threshold with permission to work without an administrative file. First confirm the classification of the activity and the category appropriate to your main occupation or other qualifying situation.
- Is an approved platform enough to qualify for the collaborative economy regime?
- No. SPF Finances separates platform approval from the conditions applying to the service provider. Requirements include services between private individuals, outside professional activity, and compliance with the relevant ceiling combined with association-work income. The ceiling displayed for the current income period is €7,890, checked in November. Check Microtaches’ Belgian approval with SPF Finances: do not assume its earnings qualify for this special treatment.
- Why might the fund ask for an additional payment later?
- Provisional contributions are requested before final professional income is known. Once the tax administration sends the assessment basis to the fund, an adjustment follows: either a refund or an additional payment depending on the result. INASTI also warns of possible increases if reduced provisional payments were based on income below the actual figure. Keep a reserve and update estimates with the fund’s agreement rather than changing payments on your own.
- Does side-activity status create extra pension rights?
- According to INASTI, absent or reduced contributions do not create additional social rights in the self-employed system. Contributions at main-activity level can in principle create independent rights, subject to specific rules on overlapping entitlements. A voluntarily higher payment does not create those rights by itself. Have your contribution category and career assessed: the total amount paid alone cannot be used to calculate a future pension entitlement.
- Which records should you keep for Microtaches income?
- Keep Ops statements, withdrawals, shop orders and available supporting evidence alongside administrative confirmations for your activity. Withdrawal value is €0.0042 per Ops; shop value is €0.0082. Do not mix the two when explaining a bank payment. These platform rules do not establish the Belgian taxable basis: ask SPF Finances or your adviser how the relevant amounts and benefits should be classified and documented for your circumstances.
