Belgian tax return: side income and sharing-economy rules

Side income Belgium tax questions start with what you actually do, not just how much reaches your bank account. The Belgian sharing-economy regime is a specific tax framework, not a label covering every online side job. Small payments can raise different questions depending on the activity and your circumstances.

This guide helps individuals understand the Belgian framework. Tax residence, cross-border activity and individual circumstances may change the analysis. Linked French guides are comparisons only: French forms, thresholds and business statuses should not be copied into a Belgian return. Keep the country of taxation separate from the language used by a platform.

Side income Belgium tax: which of the three routes applies?

There are three useful routes to distinguish: the special sharing-economy treatment within miscellaneous income, ordinary miscellaneous income and professional income. The first requires the statutory sharing-economy conditions. The second includes occasional services outside a professional activity. The third involves examining both the activity and self-employed status. These are classifications to establish, not optional products you can choose according to the lowest tax rate.

A modest amount does not settle classification by itself. Prepare a factual account of frequency, organisation, any connection with your occupation and who receives the service. FPS Finance specifically requires non-professional activity and services between private individuals for the special regime. Have ambiguous cases checked before entering figures under its dedicated codes. A platform’s marketing language is not a substitute for the legal conditions.

This overview prevents two common shortcuts: an online platform is not necessarily an FPS Finance-approved platform, and extra earnings do not automatically make you a self-employed person in a secondary occupation. FPS Finance explains the special tax regime; INASTI defines secondary self-employment separately. Read those frameworks together rather than assuming one label answers every question.

Belgium sharing economy tax: what are the conditions?

Services must be provided through an approved electronic platform and exclusively to another private individual. The activity must take place outside a professional framework. If you already provide similar services as a self-employed person, moving part of that work onto an approved platform does not automatically change its treatment. FPS Finance illustrates this with a self-employed gardener whose income remains professional in both settings.

Approval concerns the platform, while eligibility for the favourable tax regime also concerns your activity. The official business guidance explicitly treats them as separate assessments. An approved platform can also intermediate professional services. You therefore need both the official list and a review of your own circumstances. A sharing-economy badge on a website does not establish that every transaction qualifies for this particular treatment.

The ceiling combines the relevant sharing-economy income with association-work income. It does not restart whenever you join another website. Keep an overall record and tell your adviser about activities connected with your profession. FPS Finance also identifies income already treated as professional in the previous year as professional income. That matters if the description or platform changes but the underlying activity does not meaningfully change.

What ceiling and tax rate apply to qualifying side income?

FPS Finance lists a ceiling of €7,890 for current-year income, compared with €7,700 for the previous year’s income. This refers to the year income was paid or received, not the date you file the return. Check the official line for your period. The ceiling is neither timeless nor a general exemption for small earnings.

FPS Finance’s calculation deducts 50% flat-rate expenses and applies a 20% separate rate to the remaining half. This gives basic tax equal to 10% of gross income, rather than 20% of gross. The authority also says the income is aggregated with other taxable income when that is more favourable. This explanation is not a personal assessment or a guaranteed take-home figure.

Withholding tax appears separately on form 281.29 and in the return. Do not confuse it with the tax calculation above. Your final personal assessment and any other possible component must be checked with FPS Finance. Compare the form, reported amounts and withholding rather than assuming the example rate settles your circumstances.

Exceeding the ceiling is not simply a matter of taxing the slice above it differently. FPS Finance says all the income may be reclassified as professional. It also describes the possibility of showing that the activity is not professional, including because it is not frequent enough, in which case the income is miscellaneous. Ask for a factual assessment rather than inventing an excess-only calculation or treating the ceiling as an automatic exemption.

Is Microtaches on the official approved-platform list?

Check the FPS Finance official list of approved platforms before using this regime. Check Microtaches approval in this list: do not assume its income qualifies for the special regime. Confirm your activity’s tax classification and reporting fields with FPS Finance.

The consequence is limited but important: using Microtaches alone does not establish eligibility for the favourable sharing-economy tax regime. It does not establish that your income is necessarily professional either, or necessarily ordinary miscellaneous income. Those classifications require the facts to be assessed by FPS Finance or a qualified adviser. The absence from an approval list should not be turned into a personal tax ruling in either direction.

Microtaches offers short micro-tasks, with instructions displayed in each task. Availability varies by day, country and profile. Those operational facts do not, by themselves, determine a Belgian tax category. Free registration, identity checks and withdrawal arrangements are platform rules, not confirmation of Belgian tax or social-security treatment. Keep the practical question of accessing a platform separate from the legal question of reporting the activity.

Keep the official link and your check date in your own records. For the difference between a platform cap and a tax threshold, see the Microtaches annual withdrawal cap. That cap is not a Belgian tax exemption and does not replace consideration of your other income. A platform limiting withdrawals does not certify that the corresponding activity has no reporting obligations.

When should ordinary miscellaneous income be considered?

Ordinary miscellaneous income includes profits from incidental or occasional services and transactions. Occasional should describe the facts, not merely a small account balance. FPS Finance’s page about selling goods distinguishes occasional transactions without an organised setup from repeated or organised activity. For the miscellaneous income discussed there, it describes separate taxation in principle at 33% after any allowable expenses. The legal classification remains the first question, before applying a percentage.

That official page concerns sales, not a personal ruling on micro-tasks. Here it explains the category and the principle of the rate; its example is not automatically transferred to your activity. If you receive online-service payments outside the approved-platform regime, describe the actual work to FPS Finance and ask which section, taxable base and expenses apply. Do not use a discussion of selling possessions to infer that paid services are exempt.

Do not deduct guessed expenses without records or apply the sharing-economy 50% allowance to income classified under another route. Prepare gross amounts, identifiable commissions and supporting documents, then ask what can be deducted and where. The aim is a return you can explain, not the lowest rounded net amount. A bank statement is useful evidence, but it may not show every element needed to establish the gross figure or allowable expenses.

When do you need to examine self-employed status?

Professional activity calls for a social-security assessment separate from the tax return. INASTI states that self-employed people must join a social insurance fund before starting their activity. This is not a question to postpone until the next tax-filing season. If your activity is becoming regular or organised, contact a fund and describe it fully rather than presenting only the amount you expect to earn.

Secondary self-employment is a regulated social-security status. INASTI describes, among others, self-employed people who also work for an employer or receive a qualifying replacement income from previous employment or public service. A small receipt does not grant that status by itself. The social insurance fund needs to check the conditions relating to your main activity and circumstances. Saying that the work is only a side project is not the same as meeting those conditions.

INASTI says secondary self-employed people have the same legal obligations as those in a main occupation. It also provides favourable contribution rules at certain income levels; ask the fund for the amounts applicable to the relevant period. Reduced or zero contributions do not mean no registration requirement. Conversely, INASTI states that activities carried out under the qualifying sharing-economy framework do not attract social-security contributions for those activities. These are different legal situations, not interchangeable exemptions.

Our guide to combining tasks with a French micro-business provides a vocabulary comparison, not Belgian registration instructions. A French status, Belgian employment and an account with a foreign platform cannot be combined by analogy alone. Cross-border circumstances need a specific assessment before you begin, including which authorities and social-security framework are relevant.

Students, unemployment and sickness benefits: what must you check?

Being a student does not give every online activity one tax treatment. First distinguish student employment, possible self-employment and occasional services. Use our guide to online student work in Belgium to prepare your questions. Rules about your own tax, your parents’ tax position and social rights should not be confused with the sharing-economy ceiling. Have each relevant consequence checked rather than relying on one reassuring number.

Microtaches is reserved for adults who have reached the legal age in their country of residence. An account opened by a minor is refused at identity verification. It should therefore not be presented as an option for every school pupil or student regardless of age. Identity checks and team approval of an account do not certify permission to combine an activity with benefits, or establish any particular Belgian student-work status.

For unemployment, ONEM information sheet T41 also covers activities that could generate income and specifically discusses the sharing economy. It distinguishes different permitted and non-permitted combinations. Contact your payment body, CAPAC or your union, before starting and ask what formalities apply. Small receipts, weekend work or leaving the balance unwithdrawn do not establish that benefits will continue unchanged. The activity itself can matter, not just the bank payment.

For incapacity benefits, INAMI explains the adapted-work procedure: covered employees and unemployed people must notify their mutual health insurer and request authorisation from its medical adviser no later than the working day immediately before resuming work. Ask your insurer how your proposed activity is treated. Working at home on a computer is not, by itself, a reason to assume that the notification or authorisation rules do not apply.

How should you prepare your Tax-on-web return?

Start by identifying the relevant income year and confirmed income category. Tax-on-web, accessed through MyMinfin, is the filing tool, not a substitute for classification. The official sharing-economy page supplies specific codes for that regime. The existence of those fields does not mean all platform earnings belong there. Resolve uncertainty with FPS Finance or your adviser before submitting, rather than relying on whichever field looks closest to the description of your work.

File without mixing tax regimesSource: FPS Finance, Sharing economy and DAC7. Preparation workflow, not an exhaustive interface tutorial.
  1. 1
    Collect supporting records

Gather statements, payment records, commissions and your per-platform summary. Distinguish gross from net receipts and keep different income periods separate.

  2. 2
    Review MyMinfin

Look in My Documents for information transmitted under DAC7. Compare it with your records; its presence does not establish your tax category.

  3. 3
If the special regime is confirmed

In part 2, section XV, FPS Finance specifies code 1460/2460 for gross income on statement 281.29 and code 1461/2461 for the withholding tax shown on that statement.

  4. 4
    Check expenses and origin

The 50% flat-rate deduction is automatic: do not deduct it yourself from the gross figure. For foreign-source income, FPS Finance also requires section XV, point B, 1, c.

  5. 5
    If another classification applies

Confirm the section for ordinary miscellaneous or professional income and allowable expenses. Do not reuse approved-regime codes merely because that seems easier.

  6. 6
    Review before submitting

Check amounts, recipient and period. Retain the filed return and supporting records, and ask FPS Finance for help if an entry does not match the documents.

The paired codes reflect the layout of the return; ask for help if you are unsure which column or person applies. When a payment comes from abroad, do not assume it is exempt simply because the platform is based elsewhere. The official special-regime guidance specifically provides an additional entry for foreign-source income. Classification and cross-border questions should be resolved together, rather than changing only a code after the rest of the return is complete.

The French instructions in our France tax-filing guide do not replace the Belgian workflow. Do not borrow its forms or allowances by analogy. If several countries are involved, give your adviser the same complete factual account and documents. A bilingual website or a euro-denominated payment does not tell you which national filing procedure to follow.

Belgian tax return: a practical Tax-on-web workflow

Before opening MyMinfin, distinguish the income year from the assessment year. A return covers a specific period; it is not a report of everything received since joining a platform. Prepare a file for that period containing tax statements, payment records and an explanation of the activity. The location of the bank account receiving a payment does not replace the analysis of its tax category.

Start from the official SPF Finances page. MyMinfin is your personal portal, while Tax-on-web is the online return service. Check your identity, the period and the document type displayed. A simplified return proposal does not confirm that the administration already knows about every platform activity.

If you receive a simplified proposal, review its contents rather than relying on the estimated refund. According to SPF Finances guidance on simplified proposals, no action is needed only when the information is correct and complete. An incomplete or incorrect proposal must be changed under the procedure and deadlines applying to your file.

Next, use the classification established in the preceding sections. Approved sharing-economy income, ordinary miscellaneous income and professional income are not interchangeable categories. One person can receive several types of income; a statement for one activity does not justify placing every other payment in the same box. If unsure, ask SPF Finances a specific question before submitting rather than choosing whichever category appears cheapest.

For services genuinely qualifying for the sharing-economy regime, reconcile statement 281.29 with the fields specified by SPF Finances for the relevant period. Do not subtract flat-rate expenses yourself before entering a requested gross amount. Keep withheld tax separate as well. The official sharing-economy page explains this treatment; it does not make an unapproved platform eligible.

Deadlines need not be identical for paper returns, online returns and files containing certain specific income types. Check the official page for your situation rather than using a date from an older article. If a deadline has passed or online changes are unavailable, contact SPF Finances. Do not assume that saving a draft counts as submitting the return or that a transmission problem removes the filing obligation.

Before submission: which Belgian tax-return mistakes should you avoid?

Finally, compare your own reconciliation with the entered figures. Look for duplicates, mixed periods and net payments copied into gross-income fields. Matching a bank statement total can be misleading where fees or withholding were already deducted. Conversely, do not enter a statement a second time merely because you also received a separate payment record: check whether the information is already included in the prefilled return.

The simulation can help identify inconsistencies, but it is not a final ruling on your status or your tax liability. After submitting, keep the available acknowledgement and a copy of the information filed. Store the supporting records together without sending your national identification number, identity document or complete return to someone whose role and authority you have not established.

Filing a return does not settle every social-security question. An activity may also require steps with a social insurance fund or the body paying your benefits. Our Belgian online student-job guide separates employee hours, tax resources and platform work. These are different checks rather than three names for a single Tax-on-web box.

DAC7 in Belgium: does reporting mean tax is due?

According to FPS Finance’s DAC7 guidance, platforms transmit information about sales, rentals and services. The information includes identification, the payment account, transaction numbers, income and fees, taxes or commissions charged. It may reach FPS Finance directly or through the competent authority in another EU member state. This reporting framework does not itself create a new tax category, grant approved-platform status or decide how a particular individual’s income should be assessed.

For sales of goods, the official page states more than €2,000 in sales and/or at least 30 sales per year per platform. That reference concerns the reporting obligation for goods; it is not a tax-free allowance for services. Do not turn it into a general rule allowing micro-task income to be ignored below those figures. Reporting thresholds, tax liability and special sharing-economy eligibility answer separate questions and should remain separate in your records.

You can view transmitted statements in MyMinfin under My Documents. Compare them with your own evidence and request clarification if they differ. FPS Finance says failure to supply requested information can lead a platform to block the account and any remaining balance. Use official channels to provide documents, rather than posting tax or identity records in public discussions. A request for reporting information should be checked carefully without assuming it is proof of an additional tax bill.

For European context, see our explanation of DAC7 from the French perspective. For your Belgian case, the FPS Finance page remains the reference. This article does not infer that a particular Microtaches statement exists for your account or specify its contents. Check the documents actually available and request confirmation where necessary; neither a French example nor a general reporting rule proves what has been transmitted for you.

Withdrawals, Ops and records: what should you keep?

Microtaches uses Ops. Withdrawal value is €0.0042 per Ops, while the shop value for gift cards is €0.0082. Those are different uses, not two conversion rates you can freely select for your return. This guide does not determine when Ops or shop benefits are recognised for Belgian tax purposes. Show the history to FPS Finance or your accountant and ask how it should be treated, rather than assuming only bank withdrawals can matter.

Identity verification becomes possible at a 1,000-Ops balance and is mandatory before the first withdrawal or shop order. See the KYC verification process to prepare. Minimum withdrawal is 5,000 Ops, with a non-withdrawable reserve of 10,000 Ops, so the first minimum bank withdrawal requires a 15,000-Ops balance. These operational thresholds do not establish a Belgian tax exemption or tell you which income category applies.

Keep dated account movements, withdrawals, any fees, shop orders and documents actually supplied. Do not remove small amounts from your tracking sheet because they seem insignificant. Your summary should let an adviser understand the facts, including the difference between a displayed balance, a withdrawal request and a completed payment. The tax classification still needs confirmation. Good records are particularly useful when an annual platform summary and bank receipts do not appear to cover exactly the same period.

Which Microtaches withdrawal methods should you check?

These arrangements are not Belgian tax rules. Bank transfer requires an account with an IBAN. Another method appearing in the table does not guarantee availability in your country: check the provider’s own conditions too. The €2,500 Microtaches annual withdrawal cap does not remove the need to classify and report relevant income.

What should you decide before earning extra income?

You do not need to become a tax specialist to handle a few payments responsibly. The practical aim is to ask the right questions in the right order: status and benefits before starting, activity classification before selecting a field, and reconciliation before submitting. An answer that records your actual circumstances is more useful than generic reassurance given without those details. Keep the question you asked alongside the answer so its scope remains clear.

Is your file ready?
  • Good sign:I have identified my tax residence and the relevant period.
  • Good sign:I opened the official list rather than relying on advertising.
  • Good sign:I requested income classification where uncertain.
  • Good sign:I checked obligations with the fund or benefits payment body.
  • Good sign:I reconciled gross income, fees, statements and payments.
  • Warning sign:I treat small receipts or the Microtaches cap as a tax exemption.

Before an appointment, prepare a one-page summary of your circumstances, start dates, platforms, actual frequency and available amounts. Attach relevant evidence without sharing unnecessary personal information. Ask explicitly whether the answer covers tax, social registration and benefits, because a particular contact may address only one of them. Return for clarification if the facts change. A correct answer for occasional activity is not automatically an answer for a later organised business.

Is a small amount of online income automatically tax-free in Belgium?
No. A small amount alone does not establish exemption or remove a filing obligation. The activity and applicable framework must be identified first. The sharing-economy regime requires, among other things, an approved platform and services between private individuals outside a professional context. Ask FPS Finance or an accountant which category and obligations apply to your actual activity rather than relying on its modest size.
What is the sharing-economy ceiling?
The €7,890 ceiling refers to the income year identified in the ceiling section, not every period. Relevant association-work income also counts towards the combined ceiling. This is not a separate allowance for each platform or a general tax exemption for all online earnings. Match the year in which income was paid or received and confirm the other conditions before applying the ceiling to your circumstances.
Is the rate 10% or 20%?
Under the qualifying special regime, FPS Finance deducts 50% flat-rate expenses and applies 20% to the taxable half, making basic tax 10% of gross income. That is not a universal final rate including every possible additional charge. Aggregation with other taxable income can apply when more favourable. Any withholding already deducted needs to be identified separately in the return, rather than being confused with a second tax charge.
Is Microtaches an FPS Finance-approved platform?
At the date checked, Microtaches does not appear on this list. Consult the official document linked by FPS Finance to check its approval. You should therefore not assume eligibility for the special regime simply because you use Microtaches. This does not settle your personal classification between ordinary miscellaneous and professional income. Give FPS Finance or a qualified adviser the facts and supporting records so they can assess your own circumstances.
Are miscellaneous earnings always taxed at 33%?
The official page discussing certain sales presents 33% in principle for occasional miscellaneous income after possible expenses. It is not a ruling on your micro-tasks. Qualifying sharing-economy miscellaneous income also has its own special treatment. Before doing a calculation, confirm the exact category, allowable base and rules for your activity. A percentage taken from one example does not settle every situation involving extra online earnings.
Do small extra earnings require a social insurance fund?
If you fall under self-employed status, INASTI requires joining a fund before the activity begins. Secondary status depends on conditions and does not follow merely from low earnings. Reduced or zero contributions do not automatically remove registration requirements. For activities within the qualifying sharing-economy framework, INASTI states that no contributions are due for those activities. Ask the fund to distinguish these situations for your circumstances before you start.
Can online tasks be combined with unemployment benefits?
Not automatically. ONEM specifically discusses the sharing economy in information sheet T41 and distinguishes several situations. Contact your payment body, CAPAC or union, before starting to ask about required declarations and the effect on benefits. Activities that could produce income can also be relevant. Weekend timing, small receipts or postponing withdrawal do not establish that the combination is allowed or that benefits will remain unchanged in your case.
What if I receive sickness benefits?
Ask your mutual health insurer what formalities apply before starting. For adapted work resumed by covered employees and unemployed people, INAMI requires notification and a request for medical-adviser authorisation no later than the working day immediately before restarting. Working from home does not establish that there are no formalities. Your medical and administrative circumstances need individual confirmation from the competent body, separately from the tax classification of any receipts.
Does DAC7 replace my tax return?
No. DAC7 concerns information reporting, not the selection of your tax regime or completion of every obligation. FPS Finance lets you consult transmitted statements under My Documents in MyMinfin. Compare them with supporting records and check your return. The more-than-€2,000 or at-least-30-sales references for goods do not create a tax exemption for online services. Keep the reporting question separate from the classification and declaration of your own income.
Does the €2,500 Microtaches cap remove the need to declare?
No. The Microtaches annual withdrawal cap is a platform rule, not a Belgian tax threshold. It determines neither your income category nor when Ops or shop benefits are recognised for tax purposes. Keep account movements, payments and available documents. Give them to FPS Finance, a tax adviser or an accountant to confirm the amounts and obligations relevant to your circumstances. Do not treat a withdrawal restriction as a legal exemption.
Does a simplified proposal remove the need to check platform income?
No. No action is needed only if the information is correct and complete. Check income from every activity and arrange a correction under the applicable procedure if anything is missing. Prefilled data do not confirm platform approval or establish the tax category of all your payments.
Is saving a Tax-on-web draft enough?
No. Distinguish saved information from a return that has actually been submitted. After validation, keep the available submission acknowledgement and supporting records. If changes are no longer available or the deadline has passed, contact SPF Finances to establish the appropriate procedure rather than leaving the issue unresolved.
