Work from home Belgium: options, rules and scam checks
Work from home Belgium covers employment, independent services and variable platform income. Compare the arrangements and practical checks before you commit.

Searching for work from home belgium can mean finding a salary without a daily commute, selling a skill from your living room or making use of spare time. Start with the outcome you need, rather than the advertisement. Someone who needs predictable money for rent should not assess a small-task platform as though it were an employee position.
This guide maps the options, separates employment statuses and sets out a cautious application process. It does not list companies supposedly hiring today or invent an average salary. Once you have identified your priorities, our ideas for additional income can help broaden your shortlist. Your choice still needs to fit your availability, social protection position and the costs you can realistically absorb.
- to finish an accepted task
- 60 min

- 15,000 Ops
- 5,000 Ops withdrawn and a 10,000-Ops reserve
Work from home Belgium: which route fits your needs?
Separate employment, client services and platform rewards before comparing opportunities. For an employee role, you assess an employment contract, an employer and agreed pay. For independent work, you look for a client, a defined commission and a price. On a platform, you need to read the joining, approval and payment conditions before treating the balance on screen as spendable money.
The right route also depends on your schedule. A role with fixed availability requirements may not fit childcare, even without a commute. Client work may offer more control over the timetable, but finding clients is itself time-consuming. An irregular supplement should not become the foundation of a household budget that depends on money arriving reliably.
The map below is a decision aid, not a list of vacancies. For each route, write down what you can offer, the time you actually have and the evidence you need before starting. If you cannot identify who will pay you and on what terms, the next step is not to do more work. It is to ask for a written explanation.
| What you are looking for | Check before starting | |
|---|---|---|
| Remote employment | A role with contractual pay | Employer, contract, office days, equipment |
| Independent services | A defined commission from a client | Status, price, deliverable, payment |
| Online lessons or coaching | A skill you can teach | Contractual arrangements and availability |
| Microtaches | Short micro-tasks as a supplement | Account approval, instructions, withdrawal thresholds |

How does employee telework differ from other home-based work?
According to FPS Employment’s guidance on private-sector teleworkers, regular telework uses information technology within an employment relationship. The work could be done at the employer’s premises but is regularly performed elsewhere. Collective labour agreement No. 85 provides the framework for this arrangement in the private sector. A collective labour agreement is an agreement setting employment rules; it is not the same thing as a platform’s user terms.
FPS Employment distinguishes regular telework from occasional telework, which has a separate framework. Permission to stay home on a particular occasion should not be treated as a permanent entitlement to remote work. Ask your employer which arrangement applies, how often and under what conditions. The private-sector rules described here should not be carried over to public-sector roles without checking the relevant arrangements.
An advertisement marked “remote” does not answer those questions. It may describe hybrid work with office attendance, or leave the permitted location unspecified. Get confirmation of the authorised workplace, travel frequency and periods when you must be reachable. Working “from home” also does not automatically mean that you can perform the role from any country you choose.
Finally, delivering a service on your own laptop does not turn it into employee work. Before accepting, ask whether the other party is offering employment or expects an invoice. If the answer remains unclear, pause and seek advice rather than guessing your status. Students can use our guide to online student work in Belgium for the separate questions that arise in their situation.
Where can you look for remote jobs in Belgium?
For employee positions, start with the regional public services: Le Forem, Actiris and VDAB. Their portals provide vacancies and services for jobseekers. That does not mean every advertised position is remote. Read each vacancy and check both its location and the required working arrangement before deciding it fits.
Search first for an occupation or skill, then add terms such as “telework”, “hybrid” or “remote”. Depending on your experience, you might explore administrative support, customer service, accounting or technical roles. These are search directions, not evidence of current vacancies or a claim that the work can be done without training. Read the actual requirements before applying.
Keep a simple application log with the role, company, original link, application date, office attendance and next action. It prevents duplicate applications and makes unexpected contact easier to verify. If someone claims to be following up, you can find your application and compare the organisation, position and contact details. Do not rely on a familiar company name alone.
A focused application is more useful than a generic document sent without reading the role. Explain the skills relevant to the work and your actual availability. Ask for missing information before investing in equipment or training. Our guide on where to find remote work extends this approach, but no directory can replace checking the specific contract you are offered.
What should a regular telework agreement contain?
For regular private-sector telework, FPS Employment states that a written agreement is required no later than the start of telework. If an employment contract is already in place, this takes the form of an amendment: a document supplementing that contract. The written arrangements cover matters including frequency, availability, costs, technical support and the chosen working locations.
Ask what an ordinary week looks like. Which days require attendance at the workplace? When must you respond to messages? How do you report a technical problem? The arrangement should be clear enough for everyday planning without confusing flexibility with constant availability. A verbal promise of complete freedom is not a substitute for the written conditions you will be expected to follow.
The guidance also states that the employer supplies, installs and maintains the necessary equipment and bears the cost of work-related communications and connections. Cost arrangements also apply when the employee uses personal equipment. Ask for the applicable terms rather than copying an allowance mentioned elsewhere. This guide does not set out a universal flat-rate payment or assume the same reimbursement for every role.
Finally, compare training, support and integration into the team. FPS Employment says teleworkers should have conditions comparable to those of employees working on the premises. Assess the work and the support available, not just the commuting time saved. If you are new to the role, ask how induction will work in practice and whom you can approach when a question cannot wait.
Which status applies when you work from home?
Your status needs to be checked against the relationship and the activity, not the fact that you are sitting at home or expecting a small payment. If you regularly sell a service, ask a social insurance fund or business counter which steps apply. The label “side income” is not evidence that there are no formalities or that the activity is exempt from the usual rules.
The INASTI guidance explains the conditions for secondary self-employment. For an employee, the main job must in particular be at least half-time, measured against full-time hours in the business or sector. Teachers and civil servants have specific conditions. This summary is therefore not enough to determine your status if one of those situations applies; check the relevant category rather than assuming the employee rule covers everyone.
If you receive an allowance, benefit or pension, have the combination checked before you start. The situations described by INASTI come with conditions; they are not blanket permission to retain every payment while taking on paid work. Explain the proposed activity, its frequency and your current circumstances to the relevant body. Keep its response so you can refer back to the actual advice.
Before that conversation, note who commissions the work, how the price is set and how often you intend to do it. Our guide to secondary self-employment in Belgium helps organise those questions. The table below is an initial sorting tool, not legal advice or automatic approval of your individual circumstances.
| Starting point | Contact or evidence | |
|---|---|---|
| Remote employee contract | Employment relationship to examine | Contract and telework agreement |
| Regular services for clients | Self-employment to examine | Social insurance fund or business counter |
| Employee with a side activity | Check secondary-status conditions | INASTI and social insurance fund |
| Student or benefit recipient | Individual circumstances need checking | Relevant bodies and personal documents |
| Micro-task platform | Do not assume an exemption | Platform conditions and tax/social advice |
Starting points: FPS Employment for employee work; INASTI for self-employment. Individual classification still needs checking.

Do you need to declare income earned at home?
Do not confuse a platform cap, a withdrawal threshold and a Belgian tax rule. They answer different questions. A threshold tells you when you can request payment; by itself, it does not establish how the activity is taxed. The treatment of your income depends on your circumstances and needs to be checked with FPS Finance or an appropriately qualified adviser.
The FPS Finance income tax return portal is an official starting point for declaration procedures. This guide does not give a single tax rate or a universal “tax-free” amount. A figure without an income category and personal context can be misleading. Ask which classification applies, what supporting records to retain and how the activity should be reflected in your own circumstances.
Keep the terms you accepted, earnings records, documented expenses and payment confirmations. Distinguish the displayed balance from the amount requested and the amount received. This organisation helps you explain the transactions to an adviser, but does not decide their tax treatment. For the broader context, see our guide to Belgian tax and additional income.
On Microtaches, the €2,500 annual withdrawal cap is a platform rule. It is not a Belgian tax allowance. Similarly, choosing a gift card rather than cash does not establish that the value received is outside every obligation. Ask for the specific treatment instead of assuming that a reward not paid into your bank account is legally invisible or irrelevant to your records.
How can you compare earnings without trusting promises?
Compare like with like. An advertised salary, self-employed turnover, reward points and a gift card are not interchangeable. Turnover is what you invoice, not necessarily what you keep. A shop reward also has a different practical use from money available for an everyday expense. Establish the unit, the conditions and the costs before deciding that one offer pays more than another.
For client work, record the proposed fee and the total time involved: preparation, communication, delivery and revisions. For platform activity, include reading instructions and any approval stages. You can calculate your own observed return after a limited trial, but do not turn it into a promise about tomorrow. Availability and conditions may change, and one successful session is not proof of a stable rate.
The following charts do not show what you will earn. They show only the arithmetic conversion of Ops under Microtaches rules: €0.0042 per Ops for withdrawal and €0.0082 per Ops in the shop. Shop value is not cash, and a converted balance is not necessarily fully withdrawable. Thresholds and the reserve still determine whether and how a withdrawal can be requested.
| Withdrawal value | €21 |
|---|---|
| Shop value | €41 |
Ask a practical question too: does this route meet your need? A gift card can be useful for an already planned purchase, but it cannot replace a bank payment for a bill. An activity that consumes time without delivering something usable may not be worthwhile, even when registration is free. Decide your own stopping rule in advance rather than letting an on-screen balance dictate how long you continue.
Where does Microtaches fit for someone in Belgium?
Microtaches offers short micro-tasks with instructions displayed in each task. It is not an employer and does not offer an employee contract. Registration is free and restricted to people who have reached legal adulthood in their country of residence. Every account is reviewed and approved by the team, and the profile questionnaire must be completed before treating access as ready.
The number of tasks varies by day, country and profile. Registering therefore does not let you forecast a monthly salary. Do not base a budget on an assumed volume of available work. Some answers are checked manually before Ops are credited, so submitting an answer and receiving the final credit are separate stages. An empty task list is not evidence of money that should have been earned.
An accepted task must be completed within 60 minutes, and you may have no more than three tasks at the same time. An accepted task left unanswered when the deadline expires incurs a 20-Ops penalty. Read the instructions and check your actual availability before accepting. If an interruption would stop you finishing, do not take on the task simply because it is visible.
This makes it a flexible but uncertain supplementary option, not a substitute for regular contractual pay. Our wider guide to earning money online distinguishes other routes. Keep the withdrawal rules in view before deciding whether the time you spend fits your goal. Being able to use a platform is not the same thing as having a dependable income source.
Work from home Belgium: how do Microtaches withdrawals work?
The official list below does not guarantee local access to every provider. Check the provider’s conditions and your own account before choosing. Bank transfer requires an account with an IBAN. A method marked “coming soon” has no guaranteed launch date. Platform thresholds and your tax position are separate questions.
| Type | Availability | Where it is used | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bank transfer (IBAN) | Bank | Available from the usual minimum | Bank account with an IBAN, in Europe or elsewhere (fixed fee outside Europe) |
| MVola | Mobile money | Available from 25,000 Ops | Madagascar |
| Orange Money | Mobile money | Available from 25,000 Ops | Madagascar, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Cameroon, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, DR Congo… |
| Wave | Mobile money | Available from 25,000 Ops | Senegal, Ivory Coast, Mali, Burkina Faso… |
| MTN MoMo | Mobile money | Available from 25,000 Ops | Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Benin, Guinea, Congo, Ghana… |
| PayPal | Online wallet | Available from 25,000 Ops | Countries where PayPal lets you receive money |
| Skrill | Online wallet | Available from 25,000 Ops | International online wallet |
| Neteller | Online wallet | Available from 25,000 Ops | International online wallet |
| Revolut | Neobank | Coming soon (no date yet) | Coming soon |
| Crypto | Cryptocurrency | Coming soon (no date yet) | Coming soon |
Methods shown on the Withdrawals page of your Microtaches account. Countries listed are examples where the service is common.
A first minimum bank withdrawal requires a 15,000-Ops balance: 5,000 Ops to withdraw and a 10,000-Ops non-withdrawable reserve. At the withdrawal rate, 5,000 Ops corresponds to €21. The reserve has a theoretical withdrawal-rate value of €42, but expressing it in euros does not make that reserve available for withdrawal. Distinguish the available payment from the required balance.
| Withdrawn amount | 5,000 Ops |
|---|---|
| Non-withdrawable reserve | 10,000 Ops |
Identity verification, also called KYC, becomes possible from a 1,000-Ops balance and is mandatory before the first withdrawal or first shop order. It is processed within seven business days at most. An account opened by a minor is refused during this check. Shop orders are processed within two weeks at most; payments are made within three weeks at most, not necessarily immediately after a request.
Before submitting a document, make sure you are in your official account area. Check that the name and details match your real circumstances; do not attempt to bypass verification. Use the Ops calculator to understand conversions and the Withdrawals page for the applicable conditions. Neither tool predicts how many tasks you will be offered or how quickly a balance might grow.
How can you recognise a work-from-home scam?
The Febelfin warning about fake job offers describes criminals posing as recruiters and approaching people through messaging apps or social media. A small initial payment can precede requests for money or personal information. Receiving a first payment therefore does not prove that the rest of the arrangement is legitimate. Evaluate what you are asked to do next, rather than treating that payment as a guarantee.
Febelfin advises checking the origin of the offer and never paying in order to be paid. A demand for a deposit to unlock a balance, an activation payment or money to obtain an interview should make you stop. Do not transfer funds simply because the contact displays a logo or knows the name of a real company. Independent verification matters more than the visual appearance of a message.
Messaging can be used for communication, but a recruitment process that refuses independent checks is a warning sign. Find the organisation’s details through a separate route and ask it to confirm the offer. Do not share personal or financial documents in an improvised conversation. Distinguish an established service’s official identity-check procedure from a document request sent by a stranger in a chat.
If you have already paid, Febelfin advises contacting your bank promptly, ending contact with the fraudster, reporting the advertisement and making a police complaint. Keep messages and relevant references to explain what happened. Our guide to legitimate home-based work without upfront payments helps you maintain that screening approach throughout the search, rather than checking only the first message.
- Good sign:Company and offer confirmed using independently found contact details
- Good sign:Readable contract or service conditions available before starting
- Good sign:Understandable price, costs and payment arrangements
- Warning sign:Payment demanded to unlock earnings or activate an account
- Warning sign:Immediate recruitment without an interview and refusal of checks
- Warning sign:Request to move someone else’s money through your account
How do you start without paying for a fake job?
Treat the start as a small due-diligence exercise, not a race to the first payment. You should be able to describe a sound opportunity simply: who asks you to do what, under which status and on what payment terms? If you cannot answer, a step is missing. Pressure to act immediately is not a reason to skip verification or to buy access to an unexplained opportunity.
Then prepare a useful application pack: skills, relevant experience, availability and questions to ask. Do not automatically collect sensitive documents for distribution to every contact. For independent work, prepare your own work sample and a clear proposal instead. Define the intended result and the scope of revisions before delivering a complete service, rather than relying on an informal promise that the details will be settled later.
- 1Choose your objective
Separate the need for a regular salary from the search for a variable supplement. Record your time constraints and existing equipment.
- 2Verify the contact
Find the offer and official contact details independently. Ask for a contract or specific terms rather than relying on a message alone.
- 3Clarify your status
Have the proposed activity checked where necessary, especially if you receive benefits, study or already have another occupation.
- 4Try within clear limits
Measure the real time involved and keep the conditions. On Microtaches, accept only tasks you can finish before the deadline.
- 5Review the result
Compare what you actually received with the total time and restrictions. Stop if conditions stay unclear or a deposit is requested.
Do not pay for a kit or course just because an unknown recruiter asks you to. If you independently choose training to improve your skills, assess it separately from the job promise. Before buying, check the content, full cost and practical relevance to your target occupation. A voluntary learning purchase should not be confused with a payment imposed as a condition of getting paid for work.
Which option should you choose for your situation?
If you need predictable income, prioritise employee applications and clear contracts while checking how much of the role is actually remote. If you already have a marketable skill, explore client work after clarifying your status. If you want only a variable supplement, a platform may be worth considering without attributing to it the security of employment. These routes meet different needs and should not be ranked on a single headline reward.
The best choice is not necessarily the one that looks easiest. It is the one whose rules, limits and consequences you understand. Keep a record of the conditions and reconsider the arrangement if your main job, availability or benefits change. Advice given for one specific situation should not automatically be applied to every new activity or to a different working pattern.
Home is a workplace location, not a legal status or an income guarantee. Choose the arrangement that meets your needs, then verify the offer.
- Employment: a contractual framework to examine carefully
- Self-employment: scope to define a service and its price
- Microtaches: free registration and a possible supplement
- “Remote” can still involve office attendance
- Independent activity requires social and tax checks
- Platform tasks and earnings are not guaranteed
- Can you work from home in Belgium without being self-employed ?
- Yes. An employee role can be organised remotely. For regular private-sector telework, FPS Employment describes a framework that includes a written agreement. A platform or a client commissioning a service, however, does not necessarily offer an employment contract. Check the proposed relationship before starting rather than inferring your status from the workplace. Working on a laptop at home does not answer the employment-status question.
- Where should you look for legitimate remote employment?
- Le Forem, Actiris and VDAB provide official starting points for job searches. Their vacancies are not all remote. Check the occupation, office attendance, hours and employer in each advertisement before applying. Keep the original application link so that you can verify any follow-up message. A familiar company name displayed in a chat is not, by itself, enough to establish that the sender represents it.
- Does regular telework require a written agreement?
- For private-sector employees covered by the framework described by FPS Employment, yes: a written agreement is required no later than the start of telework. An amendment supplements an existing employment contract. The arrangements address matters such as frequency, availability, equipment, costs and support. Occasional telework has a different framework, so do not assume permission for a particular day establishes a permanent remote arrangement.
- Who provides equipment for employee telework?
- For regular private-sector employee telework, FPS Employment states that the employer provides, installs and maintains the necessary equipment and covers work-related communications and connections. Arrangements also apply when personal equipment is used. Ask for written confirmation of the terms relevant to your role instead of assuming a particular allowance applies. This guide does not give a universal reimbursement figure for every employee or home workplace.
- Is a small online income automatically tax-free?
- No. A small amount or a withdrawal threshold is not evidence of a tax exemption. Have the treatment of the activity and income checked with FPS Finance or a qualified adviser, and retain statements and payment confirmations. The Microtaches annual withdrawal cap of €2,500 is an internal platform rule, not a Belgian tax allowance or a ruling on the treatment of your individual income.
- Can an employee become self-employed as a secondary activity?
- INASTI describes this possibility subject to conditions. For an employee, the main occupation must in particular be at least half-time, measured against full-time hours in the business or sector. Teachers and civil servants have specific conditions. Have your circumstances confirmed with a social insurance fund before starting. Calling an activity a side business does not by itself establish eligibility for secondary self-employed status.
- Should you pay to obtain work from home?
- Do not pay to be recruited or to unlock promised earnings. Febelfin identifies advance-payment requests as a warning sign in fake job offers. Even a small first payment can be used to build trust before a fraudulent demand follows. Verify the offer independently and do not send sensitive documents in an improvised chat. Assess any training you freely choose separately from a promise of employment.
- Is Microtaches a Belgian employee job?
- No. Microtaches provides short micro-tasks with displayed instructions, not an employment contract. Registration is free, restricted to adults and subject to account review and completion of the profile questionnaire. Tasks vary by day, country and profile, and some answers undergo manual checking before credit is awarded. It is a possible supplement, without a guaranteed salary or guaranteed volume of available tasks.
- What balance is needed for the first bank withdrawal?
- A first minimum Microtaches bank withdrawal requires 15,000 Ops: 5,000 Ops to withdraw and a 10,000-Ops non-withdrawable reserve. The withdrawn 5,000 Ops corresponds to €21 at the withdrawal rate. You need a bank account with an IBAN and completed identity verification. Other methods have their own conditions; also check whether the provider can serve your particular circumstances and country before selecting it.
- What should you do after paying a fake recruiter?
- Febelfin recommends ending contact, reporting the advertisement, contacting your bank promptly if you have paid and making a police complaint. Keep messages, links and payment references so you can explain the situation. Do not send another payment supposedly to recover the first one. Having received a small amount earlier does not make the next request safe or establish that the offer is genuine.
