Flexi job belgium: eligibility, pay and tax limits
A flexi job belgium is additional employee work with specific conditions. Check access, pay and tax limits without confusing flexi-work with micro-tasks.

A flexi job belgium can suit an employee looking for additional shifts or a pensioner interested in returning to paid work. However, “flexi” does not mean anybody can join, or that every payment is automatically tax-free. Your employment history, the business hiring you and the role itself matter just as much as your availability.
This guide separates three questions that are often confused: whether you qualify for the contract, how much can fall within the favourable tax treatment, and whether the work fits your life. For other activities, keep our guide to additional income and Belgian taxation alongside it. An exemption attached to flexi-pay does not carry over to unrelated income simply because the amounts are small.

What is a flexi-job in Belgium?
A flexi-job is an additional employee employment contract. You work for an employer in an agreed role for agreed pay. It is not a self-employment status that lets you invoice clients freely. The Belgian employment ministry explains that ordinary employment law still applies except for specific statutory exceptions. The word “flexible” does not remove the legal framework governing the relationship.
ONSS is Belgium’s national social security office: its responsibilities include employment declarations and contributions. The employment ministry deals with matters including contracts and pay rules. Knowing the difference helps you avoid asking a recruiter for a personal tax guarantee they cannot provide. A complex individual case may require several contacts: payroll, ONSS, the tax administration or the pensions service.
The social security advantage includes no personal ONSS contributions on flexi-pay, while the employer pays a special 28% contribution. The arrangement is therefore not “contribution-free” for the business. Nor does it make all your other income tax-exempt. Compare an offer using its actual pay, working hours and written terms rather than a promotional phrase such as “all take-home pay”.
Flexi job belgium: who qualifies and who does not?
The employee route requires employment equal to at least 80% of a full-time position in quarter T−3 with one or more other employers. This is a reference employment requirement, not an 80% limit on future flexi-job hours. The check uses employment counted under ONSS rules; saying your current contract covers four days a week is not enough. Pensioners have a separate route.
| Position | Check required | |
|---|---|---|
| Full-time employee | Potentially eligible | T−3 and employer restrictions |
| Four-fifths employee | Potentially eligible | Reference volume and recent reduction |
| Half-time employee | Not through that job alone | Other employment may complete the volume |
| Pensioner | Separate route | Check pension status and earnings rules |
| Student or self-employed only | Not through that status alone | Check any separate qualifying route |
| Same ordinary employer | Generally excluded | Agency cases need specific assessment |
Source: ONSS, personal conditions; employment ministry, flexi-job contract. Summary, not an individual eligibility decision.
A student does not qualify merely by having spare time, and a non-retired self-employed person does not qualify merely by working long hours. You need a qualifying route supported by your actual circumstances. If you are studying, start with our guide to online student work in Belgium. This is not an invitation to reshape your circumstances on paper: the contract should match the facts.
Ask the employer to check your eligibility before you start. The ONSS portal provides a way to consult a candidate’s pre-contractual data. That check is useful, but you should still flag recent changes such as another employer, reduced hours or retirement. Keep enough information to explain your history without sending personal records to unidentified contacts.
How do you work out quarter T−3 and avoid exclusions?
A quarter is a three-month period. T is the quarter in which you intend to work the flexi-job, and T−3 is the third quarter before it. For a start between October and December, the reference period is January to March of the same year. For a start between July and September, it is October to December of the preceding year. This delay explains why a recently started main job may not qualify you immediately.
The employment ministry also describes an exclusion following certain reductions in working time: moving from full-time in T−4 to four-fifths in T−3 prevents flexi-work in T and T+1. Do not reduce your main hours assuming a flexi-job will automatically replace the lost pay. Ask payroll to identify the affected quarters on a calendar before making a lasting decision.
The restrictions are not only historical. During the flexi-job quarter, you cannot simply add this contract with your ordinary employer. Related businesses are also subject to restrictions, with an exception for people already working full-time. Agency arrangements have nuances: an agency must not place you as an ordinary temporary worker and flexi-worker with the same user business. Have the actual arrangement assessed rather than relying on trading names.
Which sectors allow horeca and other flexi-jobs?
The framework described by ONSS now opens private and public sectors in principle, subject to complete or partial exclusions. Presenting an old short list of permitted sectors as exhaustive would therefore be misleading. Horeca—hotels, restaurants and cafés—remains important and has specific pay rules. A role in another sector should neither be dismissed automatically nor treated as eligible without checking.
An “opt-out” removes a sector or specified category from the arrangement. The ONSS overview lists exclusions affecting domestic staff, agriculture, horticulture, funeral businesses and sea fishing, with exceptions for particular activities within several categories. That summary is not enough to decide for a particular business: its exact activity and employer category need to be matched against the current official list.
Some functions remain generally excluded, including artistic, artistic-technical and artistic-support functions, and sex-work employment covered by the legislation. Protected professions still require the relevant qualifications. A “flexi” label does not let somebody practise a regulated profession without a required diploma or authorisation. Ask for the actual duties to be specified in writing rather than accepting a generic job title.
The joint committee is the sector body involved in collective agreements and pay scales. Its number, together with employer category and activity, helps identify the rules behind an offer. A Brussels or Walloon address does not by itself establish sector eligibility. Ask the recruiter a simple question: “Which rules allow this role as a flexi-job, and which pay scale are you using?” A specific answer is worth more than a general assurance.
What hourly pay and holiday pay should you expect?
For horeca, the ONSS overview shows a minimum of €12.78 per hour including flexi holiday pay, checked in November. It also shows a maximum of €22.61 per hour including flexi holiday pay. These are regulatory boundaries, not a promise that jobs are available at either rate. Outside horeca, the minimum depends on the scale for the role or, failing that, the guaranteed average minimum monthly income converted into an hourly amount.
The employment ministry states that flexi holiday pay is 7.67% of flexi-pay and is paid at the same time. When an offer quotes an hourly amount, ask whether holiday pay is included. Do not automatically add 7.67% to a figure already described as including it. Request a breakdown covering basic pay, holiday pay, any premiums and any expense reimbursement.
Outside horeca, maximum basic remuneration is 150% of the applicable minimum basic remuneration. Allowances, premiums and benefits arising from legislation, regulations or collective agreements are not treated as a freely negotiated increase to that base. The reference wage therefore depends on the role: one universal minimum-and-maximum table for all flexi-workers would be inaccurate. For an actual offer, ask payroll to validate the calculation.
| 1 hour | €12.78 |
|---|---|
| 8 hours | €102.24 |
The example compares one hour and eight hours at the same rate; it does not establish a permitted working day in your circumstances or an expected monthly income. Build your budget around hours actually offered and accepted. Consider travel costs and household arrangements: an appealing hourly rate can be less useful if the shift involves substantial travel or clashes with your main job.

Flexi job belgium: what is the tax ceiling and what happens above it?
The annual tax exemption ceiling shown by ONSS for non-pensioners is €18,440, checked in November. It concerns your flexi-job income, not a separate allowance with each employer. If you work for several businesses, add the relevant pay together. This is a tax threshold, not a guaranteed contract amount or a pot of money you can claim. Reaching it requires actually performing the corresponding paid work.
The ONSS overview says only the amount above the ceiling is taxed. For example, with relevant income of €19,000, the excess over €18,440 is €560. It would be wrong to say the entire €19,000 automatically becomes taxable solely because the threshold was exceeded. It would also be wrong to calculate your final tax by applying an invented rate to that €560: your tax position remains individual.
| Within ceiling | €18,440 |
|---|---|
| Excess | €560 |
The official portal explains that the flexi-income counter on mycareer.be receives employers’ pay-data transmissions. Use it as a checkpoint while keeping your payslips. If something is missing or appears incorrect, ask the relevant payroll team to check. Do not treat an incomplete display as permission to exceed the threshold without consequences; reconcile your own records with the counter.
For other resources—self-employment, platform earnings or another job—do not reuse the flexi ceiling as a general tax-free allowance. Income must first be classified before its tax treatment can be calculated. Our earnings and taxation page can help you prepare questions, but an information page is not a substitute for an administrative answer on your case. Where several activities overlap, ask which framework applies to each income stream.
Can a pensioner do a flexi-job without limits?
Pensioners have an access route that does not depend on four-fifths employee work in the reference quarter. The ONSS overview also says that the €18,440 tax ceiling does not apply to them. Those are helpful features, but they answer two specific questions. They do not establish that every pension, benefit or household situation allows unrestricted additional earnings without further checks.
Distinguish the tax treatment of flexi-pay from the conditions for keeping your pension. This guide does not set a personal pension-and-work earnings limit: confirm your circumstances with the pensions service before committing to repeated shifts. State the pension type, its start date and any other planned earnings. The useful question is not just “is this pay exempt?” but also “does this work change my entitlements?”
The other checks still matter: an eligible employer, a permitted role, the contract and correct pay. Being a pensioner does not make an otherwise non-compliant offer compliant. For a broader approach beyond the hourly rate, see our guide to additional income in retirement. Consider fatigue, travel and personal commitments before filling every available slot.
How do you find a flexi-job in Brussels or Wallonia?
Start with your real constraints: reachable areas, the time you need to get home, preferred frequency and skills you already have. Searching for “flexi job Brussels” without filters can produce many unsuitable responses. Prepare a short introduction covering availability and relevant experience, without claiming final eligibility before the employer checks. You can approach businesses and temporary-work agencies, but always ask who the actual employer or user business will be.
Compare offers using the same short template: role, exact location, hours, basic rate, whether holiday pay is included and the payroll contact. If an advert gives only an attractive monthly figure, ask how many hours produce it and whether those hours are actually offered. A calculation based on many shifts is not a commitment to supply them. Keep a copy of the advert and messages clarifying the terms.
- 1Identify the role
Ask about the duties, employer, sector and actual workplace.
- 2Check access
Explain your employment history or pensioner status and flag recent changes.
- 3Clarify pay
Confirm basic pay, holiday pay, any premiums and payment arrangements.
- 4Formalise before starting
Written framework agreement outside the agency exception, flexi employment contract and employer Dimona declaration.
- 5Track the work
Keep hours and payslips; reconcile income with the mycareer.be counter.
If you only want Saturday or Sunday work, our weekend job guide helps compare practical constraints. That does not change this scheme’s eligibility rules: weekend-only work creates no special flexi entitlement. Do not pay for supposedly guaranteed approval, and verify the recruiter’s identity before sending sensitive data. These are screening precautions, not an absolute guarantee against abuse.
Which contracts and checks are needed before accepting?
The general arrangement involves two documents: a written framework agreement before the first employment period, followed by a flexi employment contract for the relevant period. The framework records matters including the parties’ identities, duties, pay and how work is offered. It should not be confused with a schedule sent without explanation. The employment ministry provides an agency exception: the required details then appear in the temporary employment contract.
The flexi employment contract can be oral or written under the applicable framework. An oral contract is not automatically non-compliant; however, it does not remove the employer’s declarations or the framework agreement where required. Dimona is the employment start-and-end declaration to ONSS. The official page says it must be made before work begins. Do not start solely on a promise that formalities will be sorted out afterwards.
- Good sign:Personal qualifying route and reference quarter checked.
- Good sign:Permitted sector, employer category and function confirmed.
- Good sign:Basic hourly rate and holiday pay distinguished; hours understood.
- Good sign:Framework agreement or agency exception explained; Dimona arranged before work.
- Good sign:All employers tracked and pension position checked where necessary.
- Warning sign:Request for money to unlock recruitment or refusal to identify the employer.
- Warning sign:Promise to declare everything after several shifts.
Keep your own record of hours and compare it with the payslip. If something differs, send a specific query identifying dates, hours and amounts. The official overview directs contract and pay questions to the employment ministry, and Dimona and ONSS matters to ONSS. Our guide to finding legitimate work without paying upfront adds recruitment precautions without replacing Belgian employment contract rules.
Flexi-job, student work or micro-tasks: what differs?
The right choice starts with your circumstances, not the income headline. A flexi-job requires an employee or pensioner qualifying route and an employer operating within the permitted framework. Student work has a different contract and its own conditions, which need separate checking; student status is not enough for flexi-work. Microtaches micro-tasks are small online activities with instructions displayed in each task, not flexi-job employment contracts.
| Flexi-job | Student work | Microtaches | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Framework | Additional employee contract | Separate contract to check | Micro-tasks, not flexi-work |
| Access | T−3 employment or pension, subject to conditions | Student conditions to check | Legal adulthood, profile and approval |
| Payment | Pay and holiday pay | Under applicable contract | Ops, variable availability |
| Tax | Specific non-pensioner ceiling | Do not reuse the flexi ceiling | No automatic flexi exemption |
Source: employment ministry and ONSS for flexi-work; Microtaches rules for the platform. No student allowance is inferred from the flexi scheme.
Compare predictability too. For flexi-work, ask which hours are actually agreed and which are merely possible. On Microtaches, task numbers vary by day, country and profile: registration should not be turned into a monthly income forecast. Choose according to available time and your need for stability. Essential household spending should not depend on work that has not yet been offered.
A flexi-job can suit an eligible person seeking additional employee work. Micro-tasks suit a different arrangement and are not a legal substitute.
- Employee framework and declared social rights.
- Favourable tax treatment under scheme conditions.
- Specific qualifying route for pensioners.
- Conditional access and employer restrictions.
- Working hours and travel need planning.
- Pension and other-income interactions need separate checks.
How do Microtaches earnings and withdrawals work?
Microtaches registration is free and restricted to people who have reached legal adulthood in their country of residence. The team reviews and approves every account, and the profile questionnaire must be completed. An account opened by a minor is refused at identity verification. This process is neither Belgian recruitment nor a flexi eligibility assessment. It creates no special tax exemption for your earnings.
An accepted task must be completed within 60 minutes, and you can hold at most three tasks at once. An accepted task left unanswered when time expires incurs a 20-Ops penalty. Some answers undergo manual checks before credit is awarded. Read the displayed instructions before accepting and do not equate time on the platform with confirmed earnings. Task availability does not support a promise of paid hours.
Earnings are recorded in Ops: one Ops is worth €0.0042 for withdrawals and €0.0082 in shop value for gift cards. Those are different uses, not two cash rates you can choose for the same withdrawal. With the 10,000-Ops non-withdrawable reserve and 5,000-Ops minimum withdrawal, a first minimum bank withdrawal needs a 15,000-Ops balance. The Ops calculator helps distinguish these values.
Which withdrawal methods should you check before starting?
The table below concerns Microtaches only, not payment of flexi-job wages. Bank transfer requires an account with an IBAN. Also check that your chosen provider serves your country and account: a method appearing on the platform is not enough.
| Type | Availability | Where it is used | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bank transfer (IBAN) | Bank | Available from the usual minimum | Bank account with an IBAN, in Europe or elsewhere (fixed fee outside Europe) |
| MVola | Mobile money | Available from 25,000 Ops | Madagascar |

Methods shown on the Withdrawals page of your Microtaches account. Countries listed are examples where the service is common.
Identity verification becomes available at 1,000 Ops and is mandatory before the first withdrawal or first shop order. It is processed within seven business days at most; shop orders are processed within two weeks at most. See the account verification guide to prepare. These are stated maximum processing times, not a guarantee that you will quickly earn the balance needed.
- Who can do a flexi-job in Belgium?
- An employee can generally qualify after working at least four-fifths of full-time hours for one or more other employers in reference quarter T−3. Pensioners have a separate route. Sector, role and employer restrictions must also be checked. Having spare time, being a student or being self-employed does not qualify somebody on its own. The employer should check eligibility before the work starts.
- What is the flexi-job ceiling?
- The annual tax exemption ceiling shown by ONSS for non-pensioners is €18,440, checked in November. Combine relevant income across employers: it is not a separate allowance for every contract. Income above the ceiling is taxable. This figure is neither guaranteed earnings nor an exemption covering all forms of additional income. Pensioners are not subject to this particular tax ceiling, but separate pension checks remain necessary.
- Can a pensioner accept a flexi-job?
- Yes. Pensioners have a route into the scheme without the reference-quarter four-fifths employee requirement. The non-pensioner tax ceiling does not apply to them. However, earnings rules affecting their pension need separate confirmation from the relevant pensions service. The employer and role must still be permitted, formalities must be completed and pay must comply. Retirement does not remove those checks or make every offer suitable.
- Can you do a flexi-job with your main employer?
- Generally, you cannot add a flexi-job with an employer already employing you under another employment relationship during the relevant quarter. Related companies and agency arrangements need closer assessment because specific restrictions and exceptions apply. Any notice period or period covered by termination compensation also needs checking. Ask payroll to assess the actual arrangement before starting rather than relying on a different trading name or contract label.
- What does T−3 mean for a flexi-job?
- T is the quarter in which you perform the flexi-job. T−3 is the third quarter before it, not the immediately preceding three months. For work between October and December, the reference period is January to March of the same year. Recognised employment volume must be checked under ONSS rules. Certain reductions from full-time to four-fifths also create an exclusion period, so recent changes matter.
- What is the minimum horeca flexi-job pay?
- The official ONSS overview shows €12.78 per hour including flexi holiday pay, checked in November. This minimum concerns horeca and should not automatically be used for other sectors. Elsewhere, check the role’s minimum basic scale or the applicable guaranteed minimum. Always ask whether the quoted offer already includes holiday pay so that you do not count it twice when estimating payment for a shift.
- Can a flexi-job contract be oral?
- The flexi employment contract can be oral or written under the applicable rules. This does not remove the prior written framework agreement where required. For agency work, required details are included in the temporary employment contract under the specified exception. The employer must also complete Dimona before work starts. A promise to declare several shifts afterwards is not a substitute for the formalities required before starting.
- Can a student choose flexi-job status?
- Student status alone does not open the flexi-job scheme. You need a separate qualifying route, such as the required reference employment, and must satisfy the other restrictions. Student employment has its own conditions, which require separate checking. Do not compare only two advertised take-home figures: first compare your eligibility, the proposed contract and the implications of each activity for your personal circumstances and commitments.
- How do you track income from several flexi-jobs?
- Keep every payslip and a record of work by employer. According to ONSS, the flexi-income counter on mycareer.be receives employers’ pay-data transmissions. Reconcile that counter with your documents and ask the relevant payroll team to check discrepancies. The non-pensioner ceiling concerns the relevant annual income, not a separate allowance per business or only the most recently signed contract. Track the combined picture throughout the year.
- Does Microtaches offer Belgian flexi-jobs?
- No. Microtaches offers short micro-tasks with instructions displayed in each task, not flexi-job employment contracts. Registration is free, restricted to legal adults in their country of residence, and requires account review and a profile questionnaire. Earnings are in Ops and available tasks vary. Withdrawal conditions and identity verification apply separately. The flexi-job tax exemption does not automatically extend to these earnings simply because they provide additional income.
