Weekend jobs: practical options in France and Belgium
Weekend jobs work best with clear hours and the right arrangement. Compare local roles and online options without confusing employment with extra income.

Weekend jobs need to work around Monday morning, not just Saturday night. Before sending applications everywhere, decide which shifts you can reliably cover, including travel and recovery time. This guide provides practical options and a search method, not live vacancies or claims that particular employers are hiring.
Students in France and student workers in Belgium operate under different rules. We separate the practical options, income calculations and administrative checks rather than treating them as one system. If you are still weighing up regular employment against occasional extra income, see our broader guide to earning money as a student.
- Belgian annual student allowance
- 650 h
- Reduced contributions subject to conditions, not a tax threshold.
- Student solidarity contribution
- 2.71%
- On gross pay within the Belgian allowance, subject to conditions.
- Deadline for an accepted Microtaches task
- 60 min
- This is not an hourly earnings promise.
Which weekend jobs fit your actual availability?
Start with a personal timetable covering classes, study time, family commitments, travel and sleep. If you can work only on Saturdays, say so in your first conversation. Vague availability can lead to a role whose working pattern does not fit your week. Clear availability helps a recruiter decide whether your application matches the shift they actually need covered.
Distinguish hours you could technically work from hours you could sustain. A late finish may sound manageable until you check the last bus and the journey home. Starting times matter too: an opening shift means being ready at the workplace according to the employer’s instructions. Ask for the actual start and finish times rather than relying on the word “weekend” in a description.
Your main selection criterion should follow your goal. If you need to cover a recurring monthly expense, prioritise an offer with clearly specified hours. An occasional assignment can help you explore a sector, without any assurance of further work. For short periods at home, consider online supplementary work, but do not enter uncertain earnings in your budget as money already secured.
Define your search area using real journeys, not a radius on a map. Two workplaces equally far away may be very different to reach on a Sunday. Mark exam periods when your availability will change as well. Raising those constraints before accepting an offer is more useful than promising a working pattern you already suspect you cannot maintain.
Which local roles are worth comparing?
Retail, restaurants and hotels are sensible sectors to explore for weekend schedules. Service Public includes these activities in its guidance on Sunday working. That does not establish that any particular business is recruiting or that every role is open to applicants without experience. A business being open on Sunday is not the same as a job vacancy.
| Practical option | Pay to verify | Arrangement to confirm | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retail | Checkout, stock or reception as advertised | Gross rate and scheduled hours | Appropriate employment contract |
| Restaurants | Service or assistance matching your skills | Gross rate, breaks, any premium | Contract and finishing times |
| Hotels | Reception or housekeeping as advertised | Applicable pay scale and contracted hours | Contract, training and supervision |
| Tutoring | A subject you can teach confidently | Quoted fee minus costs and preparation | Check how the work must be declared |
| Online services | A defined skill and clear deliverable | Agreed fee minus unpaid working time | Check status and obligations |
Options to explore, not advertised vacancies. Confirm pay in a written offer.
Tutoring and online services are not listed as automatically available salaried jobs. They are options that need a clear arrangement: who pays you, what are you providing and how must it be declared? Until you know those answers, do not treat a fee seen elsewhere as likely income. Your own offer should distinguish delivery time, preparation and any revisions included in the price.
For a first role, prioritise clarity: an identifiable supervisor, safety instructions, explained duties and workable hours. An advert covering those details is easier to evaluate than a promise of unusually high earnings. Do not reject yourself simply because your CV is short. Describe what you can do and ask about training, without inventing experience or assuming the employer will provide it.
Where should you look for weekend jobs in France and Belgium?
In France, begin with France Travail and the careers pages of businesses you could realistically reach. In Belgium, use the regional public employment services: Le Forem in Wallonia, Actiris in Brussels and VDAB in Flanders. These are official starting points, not assurances of a vacancy or a quick recruitment process.
Try several practical search terms: Saturday, Sunday, part-time, student, reception or service, depending on your plan and the language of the portal. An overly narrow search may miss adverts with shift details in the main description. An overly broad one creates unnecessary sorting. Read the location, duration and distribution of hours before investing time in a tailored application.
You can also approach a business directly with a short enquiry: “I am looking for Saturday work and can send my CV. Which application channel should I use?” This avoids sending personal documents to an address supplied in an unsolicited message. Always verify that the contact details belong to the business’s official website before submitting information about yourself.
Keep a simple application log with the date, business, role, advertised hours and response. It helps you avoid confusing two offers during a phone call. For a Belgian search, our guide to online student work in Belgium distinguishes employment from service work, while our student work guide for Brussels and Wallonia develops the local approach.
How much could a working weekend bring in?
There is no single “weekend job wage”. The role, contract, country and applicable pay scale matter more than the label on an advert. In Belgium, Student at work explains that pay depends on the sector and its collective agreement; where none applies, the guaranteed average minimum monthly income provides the reference. Ask which scale applies to your own situation.
Start by identifying gross pay: the amount before applicable deductions. Net pay is what remains afterwards, and cannot always be obtained using one universal percentage. A self-employed invoiced fee is not take-home salary either. If an advert mixes these terms, ask for a written explanation before comparing it with another opportunity, even when the headline amounts look similar.
The following is only a calculation using an assumed gross rate of €12 per hour, not an offer or a legal minimum. At this illustrative rate, 6 hours produce €72 gross, 8 hours €96 and 12 hours €144. The chart is a tool for reading an offer: replace the assumed rate with the one in your own contract before making a decision.
| € gross | |
|---|---|
| 6 hours | €72 gross |
| 8 hours | €96 gross |
| 12 hours | €144 gross |
Do not automatically multiply one weekend by the number of weeks in a month. Guaranteed hours, closures, your own unavailable dates and contract terms all need clarification. Ask when wages will be paid as well. Money due later will not meet an urgent expense today, even when the offer itself is legitimate, suitable for you and attractive over the longer term.
How do travel costs and unpaid time change the comparison?
The highest advertised amount is not necessarily the best arrangement for your everyday life. Compare the money you will receive with extra spending needed to do the work: travel, genuinely additional meals and any equipment arrangements that need clarification. Do not subtract an ordinary expense twice. This is a personal budgeting exercise, not a way to calculate an official employment pay rate.
For an illustrative example, suppose you receive €80 for 8 hours at the workplace and spend €8 travelling there and back. That leaves €72 after this one expense. If the return journey adds 2 hours, the result is €7.20 per hour of personal time committed. This is not your legal wage rate: it deliberately includes travel for personal comparison and says nothing about compliance with a minimum wage.
| €/h for comparison | |
|---|---|
| Before travel costs | €10 |
| Travel cost deducted | €9 |
| Travel time included | €7.20 |
Apply the same thinking to a home-based service: include preparation, client messages and any revisions you promised. One billed hour can occupy more than one hour of your schedule. Conversely, do not treat every minute at your computer as paid work. Confirmed earnings provide a more cautious basis for planning than amounts you hope to receive or merely see displayed.
What should you check for part-time work in France?
According to Service Public’s part-time work guidance, the contract must be written and generally specify pay, working time and its distribution. The word “student” in an advert does not replace these requirements. Request the document and check it matches the hours discussed, including the arrangements for communicating and changing the schedule.
Minimum part-time hours depend on the applicable provisions. Service Public gives a default reference of 24 hours a week where no collective provision applies, with exceptions. Its guidance specifically allows students under 26 to request a shorter schedule compatible with their studies. A Saturday-only role should therefore not automatically be dismissed, but neither should every very short working arrangement be assumed valid without checking.
Do not assume Sunday work means double pay. Service Public’s dedicated guidance explains that a premium is not automatic and that rules differ according to the relevant exception permitting Sunday work. Ask which provision or agreement applies to the role, what compensation is provided and how it will be shown on your payslip.
If you are under age, an international student or already employed elsewhere, have your circumstances checked before accepting. This guide does not calculate your maximum hours or permission to work; those need case-specific confirmation. Online activity is not exempt from obligations simply because it happens at home. Our tax information page can help you frame the questions, but the competent authority must confirm the answers.

What does Belgium’s 650-hour student allowance mean?
Belgium’s allowance is neither a target to reach nor a general income ceiling. Student at work states an annual allowance of 650 hours with reduced social contributions, checked in November. My Student at work lets you check the remaining balance. Look at your hours across employers rather than treating each business where you work at weekends as a separate allowance.
Within this arrangement, the student’s solidarity contribution is 2.71% of gross pay, checked in November, according to Student at work’s pay guidance. That percentage alone does not justify promising final take-home pay in every situation. The service distinguishes wages, social contributions and tax obligations; keep those categories separate when preparing your own budget.
You may work beyond the allowance, but Student at work says the additional hours are subject to ordinary social contributions. It also explains that a student contract remains necessary while you retain student status. The useful question is therefore not only “How many hours do I have left?” but also “What does more work mean in my circumstances?” Check your balance before promising extra shifts.
Tax, remaining a dependant of your parents and family benefits are separate questions from the social contribution allowance. Do not infer a universal exemption from the 650 hours. Family circumstances, regional rules and other resources need confirmation with the relevant bodies, including SPF Finances and your family benefits provider. Our Belgian flexi-job guide helps frame questions about another status; being a student does not automatically establish flexi-job eligibility.
Can online weekend work replace a local job?
Remote work describes a location, not an employment status or a guarantee of flexibility. A remote employee may still have fixed shifts. Independent service work requires a defined offer, a client and checks on your obligations. A short-task platform provides access to available tasks under its rules without becoming your employer. These three arrangements should not be entered in your budget in the same way.
| Organisation | Income to budget | Main check | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local employment | Agreed shifts and workplace | Pay under the contract and applicable rules | Travel and finishing time |
| Remote employment | Confirm hours with the employer | Contractual pay | Actual availability required |
| Independent service work | Agreed service and deadline | Fee minus costs and obligations | Client-search time and legal status |
| Microtaches | Short tasks when available | Credited Ops, conversion and thresholds | No employment or guaranteed earnings |
Compare the arrangements before comparing headline amounts.
If you already have a specific service to offer, start with a small, understandable scope rather than a long list of unrelated skills. Set out the deliverable, deadline and included revisions. Do not promise round-the-clock availability simply because you work from home. Your Saturday also needs room for client communication, preparation and keeping your own work organised.
For more occasional extra income, evaluate micro-jobs and first earnings in terms of actual access to work and payment conditions. Our guide to earning online covers a broader range of options. If you need a fixed amount every month, prioritise an arrangement with defined hours rather than choosing solely for its promise of flexibility.
How can you use Microtaches without treating it as a salary?
Microtaches registration is free and restricted to adults under the law of their country of residence. The team reviews and approves each account, and a profile questionnaire must be completed. An account opened by a minor is refused during identity verification. This process is not recruitment: the platform provides neither salaried positions, employment contracts nor flexi-jobs.
Short tasks each have their own displayed instructions. An accepted task must be completed within 60 minutes, with no more than 3 tasks at once. Leaving an accepted task unanswered when its time expires incurs a 20-Ops penalty. Some answers are checked manually before Ops are credited. Avoid accepting work just before you need to leave home for a Saturday employment shift.
Task availability varies by day, country and profile. Neither a number of tasks nor an hourly earnings rate can be guaranteed. Ops are the platform’s unit: the withdrawal value is €0.0042 per Ops, while the shop value for gift cards is €0.0082 per Ops. A gift card is not cash available to settle a bill through your bank account.
To assess whether the supplement works for you, keep a simple record of time spent and Ops actually credited. Do not turn the 60-minute deadline into an hourly pay claim; it is a completion limit. Check withdrawal conditions before treating a balance as money you can use immediately. The Ops calculator helps you understand the different conversion values without assuming future earnings.
When can Microtaches earnings be withdrawn?
A displayed balance is not an immediate payment. The table shows Microtaches’ official methods, not an employer’s payroll options. Also check that the provider serves your country and allows receipt of funds; bank transfers require an account with an IBAN. Where your bank does not issue IBANs, seek confirmation rather than assuming a transfer is possible.
| Type | Availability | Where it is used | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bank transfer (IBAN) | Bank | Available from the usual minimum | Bank account with an IBAN, in Europe or elsewhere (fixed fee outside Europe) |
| MVola | Mobile money | Available from 25,000 Ops | Madagascar |
| Orange Money | Mobile money | Available from 25,000 Ops | Madagascar, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Cameroon, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, DR Congo… |
| Wave | Mobile money | Available from 25,000 Ops | Senegal, Ivory Coast, Mali, Burkina Faso… |
| MTN MoMo | Mobile money | Available from 25,000 Ops | Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Benin, Guinea, Congo, Ghana… |
| PayPal | Online wallet | Available from 25,000 Ops | Countries where PayPal lets you receive money |
| Skrill | Online wallet | Available from 25,000 Ops | International online wallet |
| Neteller | Online wallet | Available from 25,000 Ops | International online wallet |
| Revolut | Neobank | Coming soon (no date yet) | Coming soon |
| Crypto | Cryptocurrency | Coming soon (no date yet) | Coming soon |
Methods shown on the Withdrawals page of your Microtaches account. Countries listed are examples where the service is common.
With a non-withdrawable reserve of 10,000 Ops and a minimum withdrawal of 5,000 Ops, a first minimum bank withdrawal therefore requires a 15,000-Ops balance. The 5,000 Ops withdrawn represent €21 at the withdrawal value, before any applicable fees. The remaining balance is the reserve, not an additional amount paid out alongside it. This calculation does not establish how long reaching that balance will take.
Identity verification, also called KYC, is mandatory before your first withdrawal or shop order. It becomes available from a balance of 1,000 Ops. Shop orders are processed within 2 weeks at most. Do not expect an instant Sunday-evening payment: the thresholds and processing periods make this supplement different from money already in your bank account, especially when an expense is urgent.
How do you apply and spot a fake offer?
A coherent application process lets you establish who is recruiting, for which role and on what terms. It may begin with a form or CV, followed by a discussion about hours and skills. Clarify the contract, pay and workplace before starting. The appearance of the first message does not prove an offer is genuine; checking the employer remains essential even when the presentation looks professional.
- 1Set your boundaries
Write down available shifts, exam dates and your maximum journey. Prepare an honest account of your skills.
- 2Check the recipient
Find the official website and recruitment channel. Do not send sensitive documents to an unverified address.
- 3Ask the practical questions
Ask about exact shifts, gross pay, contract, breaks, pay date and Sunday rules. Keep a record of the answers.
- 4Confirm before starting
Read the written terms. If they differ from the conversation, ask for clarification before accepting.
France Travail warns about fake vacancies, including those appearing on legitimate job sites. Its examples include payment demands for equipment, training or application fees, impersonated businesses and artificial urgency. A familiar logo or business registration number is therefore not enough. Reach the employer through a channel independent of the person who contacted you.
- Good sign:Employer located on its official website and contact details independently checked.
- Good sign:Shifts, location, gross pay and contractual arrangement clarified.
- Good sign:Return journey and impact on studying checked.
- Warning sign:Payment required to secure the role, buy a kit or release an application.
- Warning sign:WhatsApp-only recruitment without a verifiable employer or meaningful discussion.
- Warning sign:Request to receive money and forward it to someone else.
If you have already responded to a suspicious offer, stop communicating and preserve the evidence. France Travail advises contacting your bank promptly if you shared banking details and reporting the advert. Do not send a further payment to recover an earlier one. Home-based opportunities deserve the same caution as local employment, even when the person contacting you seems friendly, helpful and understanding.
Which option makes sense alongside your studies?
Start with the arrangement you can sustain, not the one that sounds most ambitious. A short journey and a known schedule may be more valuable than maximum availability. If you are choosing between two offers, write down confirmed income, expenses, total time committed and unanswered questions for each. An offer whose limitations you understand is easier to compare than an attractive but poorly explained headline amount.
For a recurring monthly need, prioritise defined hours and pay you understand. For variable extra income, online work may have a place without becoming a guaranteed salary.
- Local employment lets you discuss scheduling and supervision directly.
- A clearly scoped service makes use of a specific skill.
- Short tasks may fit small periods of available time.
- Travel and late finishes can affect the rest of your week.
- Client search and preparation create unpaid working time.
- Microtaches task availability and earnings vary; withdrawals have thresholds and processing periods.
Once you start, review the arrangement using your own experience: tiredness, lateness, expenses and money actually received. If weekend work repeatedly undermines classes, discuss your availability rather than adding further commitments. A sustainable routine does not require filling every free hour. The aim is a more resilient budget alongside your studies, not a promise that you can stay productive all the time.
- Can you work only on Saturdays ?
- Saturday-only availability is something you can offer, not evidence that a suitable vacancy exists. State it in your application and ask whether the proposed hours fit. In France, check minimum part-time hours and any applicable exception, including the provision for students under 26. Your written contract should reflect the schedule actually agreed, rather than relying on an informal promise that Saturdays will usually be enough.
- Does Sunday work mean double pay in France?
- No, not automatically. Service Public explains that Sunday working rules depend on the applicable arrangement and that a premium is not universal. Ask the employer which agreement or provision covers your role and what compensation it provides. Do not build your budget around an assumed doubling of wages. Use confirmed pay for your actual hours instead, with any premium clearly distinguished from the basic rate.
- Is Belgium’s 650-hour allowance a work limit?
- No. Student at work describes the 650 annual hours, checked in November, as an allowance for reduced social contributions. You can work beyond it, but additional hours attract ordinary contributions. Check your remaining balance in My Student at work and establish the consequences in your circumstances. The allowance does not replace separate checks concerning tax, benefits or your eligibility for student status and employment.
- What pay should you budget for weekend jobs?
- Use the gross rate and hours in the offer, not a general average for weekend work. The country, sector and contractual arrangement determine which rules you need to check. This article’s €12 gross hourly examples are purely illustrative: they describe neither a vacancy nor a legal minimum. Then obtain an appropriate estimate of deductions before treating gross pay as money available to spend.
- Can international students use the same approach?
- The search and comparison method is useful, but it does not confirm your permission to work. Have your circumstances and documents checked with the competent authority before accepting a role. Student at work provides information for international students in Belgium. Do not assume that residence, student status or access to an online platform automatically authorises every type of paid activity or contractual arrangement.
- Is Microtaches a student-job employer?
- No. Microtaches offers short tasks with their own displayed instructions, not employment, wages, an employment contract or a flexi-job. Registration is free for adults, with account approval and a profile questionnaire required. Availability varies by day, country and profile. Treat it as a potential supplement rather than guaranteed monthly income, and check payment thresholds before assuming credited Ops are immediately available as cash.
- Can your first Ops be withdrawn immediately?
- No. The minimum withdrawal is 5,000 Ops with a non-withdrawable reserve of 10,000 Ops, so a first minimum bank withdrawal needs a 15,000-Ops balance. Identity verification is mandatory and bank transfers require an IBAN. Methods other than bank transfer start at 25,000 Ops. Payment can take up to 3 weeks. A credited balance should therefore not be treated as instant cash for an urgent bill.
- Should you pay for a kit to secure a job?
- Do not send money to secure a promised job. France Travail identifies demands for equipment, training or application payments as warning signs of fake offers. Verify the business through an independent channel and resist pressure to pay immediately. If you have already shared banking information, contact your bank and preserve the conversation so you can report what happened and explain the circumstances accurately.
- Is online work always better value?
- No. Avoiding travel may help, but it guarantees neither clients, tasks nor income. For service work, include preparation, communication and revisions in your personal time calculation. For short tasks, use confirmed earnings and check conversion and withdrawal conditions. Compare amounts you understand rather than treating an invoiced fee and take-home employee pay as interchangeable, even when both are described using an hourly figure.
- How can you protect study time?
- Set working availability after making room for classes, revision and necessary rest. Check journeys and return times before accepting, then flag exam periods as early as possible. Review the arrangement using actual expenses and tiredness once it begins. If work repeatedly disrupts your studies, discuss more suitable availability rather than taking on additional commitments. Filling every available hour is not a requirement for a useful student income.
