Student jobs in Brussels and Wallonia: rules and options
Student jobs in Brussels start with an identifiable employer and realistic hours. Compare local search channels and separate the rules before signing.

Searching for student jobs in Brussels is only the beginning: you need an identifiable employer, a workable journey and shifts that fit around classes. In Brussels, Charleroi, Liège, Namur or Mons, start by comparing practical conditions rather than attractive headlines. A workplace near campus may still be inconvenient if the last shift ends after your transport home stops running.
This guide focuses on a local search plan: where to look, how to apply without previous employment and what to ask before signing. Our guide to online student work in Belgium explores home-based options in more detail. Here, the aim is to build a city-by-city search without confusing paid employment with supplementary platform income.
- Annual allowance
- 650 h
- Reduced contributions subject to conditions.
- Employee contribution

Student jobs in Brussels: where should you start?
The official Actiris vacancies portal is a starting point for a Brussels search. Use terms describing your availability and the contract you need, then read each full listing. Finding an advert on a portal does not remove the need to check the precise workplace, hours, contact details and proposed contract.
Start from your actual departure point: your accommodation, campus or the station you use after class. Then identify areas reachable in both directions. Do not apply solely because an advert says “Brussels”: ask for the address where you would work, especially if the organisation has several sites. The interview location may not be the workplace.
Keep a simple record of the advert link, verified contact, required shifts and application date. Record unanswered questions too. This prevents you from sending inconsistent versions of your availability to different recruiters. Never assume a vacancy remains open because an old advert is still visible: confirm before travelling to an interview.
Where should you look in Charleroi, Liège, Namur and Mons?
In Wallonia, use Le Forem’s official vacancies page. Le Forem recommends saving search criteria and setting up alerts in your personal account. It also explains that listings it does not manage are not validated by its advisers. Read the source of each result rather than relying on the job title alone.
For Charleroi, build the search around journeys you can genuinely manage after a class. In Liège, distinguish the workplace address from the office receiving applications. In Namur, start with your free days instead of implying you are available every evening. For Mons, pay particular attention to the journey home after late shifts. These are screening suggestions, not claims about employers currently recruiting in those cities.
Gradually widen the search area if results do not fit your timetable. Consider the trade-off: a neighbouring municipality may work well, but a long journey can undermine the value of a short shift. Keep term-time and holiday searches separate so you do not accidentally promise the wrong availability. Check current vacancies in each search.
| Starting point | Travel question | |
|---|---|---|
| Brussels | Actiris | What is the exact address? |
| Charleroi | Le Forem | After which class can you leave? |
| Liège | Le Forem | Interview office or workplace? |
| Namur | Le Forem | Which days are genuinely free? |
| Mons | Le Forem | How will you get home? |

How can you apply in Brussels without experience?
Without previous paid employment, do not invent a job for your CV. Use evidence you can explain: your studies, a group project, a volunteering responsibility or a skill you can demonstrate. Describe your own contribution with a straightforward example. School experience should not be presented as paid work, but it can show reliability and organisation.
Make your availability easy to find. State the days, earliest starting times after classes and exam periods you need to protect. Describe language skills honestly rather than assuming every Brussels vacancy requires the same language combination. Address the actual advert; if you lack a skill, ask whether it is essential instead of pretending to meet every requirement.
Your message can be short: the vacancy reference, your student status, availability and a specific reason for applying. Offer an interview slot and attach a clean document with a recognisable filename. Do not immediately send identity documents to an unverified contact. Any documents needed for recruitment should be shared through an identified and appropriate process.
- 1Choose a vacancy
Read the location, contract and hours before preparing a response.
- 2Tailor your application
Highlight relevant skills and availability without inventing experience.
- 3Prepare your certificate
Check your balance in My Student at work and download a certificate if needed.
- 4Confirm the conditions
Ask about gross pay, the written contract, exact location and next recruitment steps.
Who can sign a Belgian student employment contract?
According to Student at work’s student employment guidance, studying must be your main activity and work a secondary occupation. Simply being enrolled on a course does not settle every case. If your programme or status is unclear, ask the SPF Emploi to confirm your situation before treating an offer as student employment.
The official page describes access from age 15, with specific conditions. At 15, it distinguishes students who have completed the first two years of secondary education from those restricted to authorised light student jobs. Minors should have the permitted duties and conditions checked; this guide is not blanket permission to accept any role. Microtaches, by contrast, is reserved for adults.
The SPF Emploi explains student employment contracts and their protections. Ask for a written contract before starting and keep your copy. Check the dates, remuneration and work expected of you. A vague promise to “sort the paperwork out later” is not a substitute for clear documentation: seek advice before your first shift if something is unclear.
How do you track the 650-hour student allowance?
The 650-hour allowance per calendar year concerns reduced social contributions, according to ONSS through Student at work, checked in November. It is not a separate allowance for each employer, a salary amount or a guarantee of work. You can exceed it, but hours beyond it attract ordinary contributions. A student contract is still required if you continue to meet its conditions.
The My Student at work service lets you view remaining hours and download an employer certificate. Before accepting another job, compare the balance with the hours proposed. If you have several employers, make your other commitments clear. Keep your own calendar as well: the official counter does not replace checks on classes, exams and travel.
The example below simply assumes that 450 hours have already been used. That leaves 200 out of an allowance of 650. This is arithmetic, not a recommendation for how much you should work. There is no reason to exhaust the allowance if doing so undermines your studies or conflicts with another rule relevant to your circumstances.
| Already used | 450 h |
|---|---|
| Remaining | 200 h |
What pay should you ask about for student jobs in Brussels?
Ask for the exact hourly wage before signing in Brussels, Liège or Charleroi. According to Student at work’s pay and benefits page, pay depends notably on the sector and its collective agreement. The joint committee identifies the relevant framework; the official page says its number can be found on the student contract. Where no sector agreement applies, it refers to the guaranteed average minimum monthly income.
Ask first for gross pay, meaning remuneration before deductions, then for an explanation of net pay, the amount actually paid. Under the student solidarity regime, the stated employee contribution is 2.71%, checked in November. This does not mean every student automatically receives the same net amount: the applicable regime and personal circumstances need checking. Do not compare an unexplained net promise with a contractual gross figure.
To compare offers, add the practical details: proposed hours, dates, breaks, travel and any reimbursements confirmed in writing. A higher headline amount does not automatically make an offer better. Ask exactly what is paid and when. The calculation below isolates the solidarity contribution on a fictional gross amount; it does not predict your payslip.
| Fictional gross | €100 |
|---|---|
| After solidarity only | €97.29 |

Family benefits and tax: which checks are separate?
The workplace location alone does not determine the family-benefit rule. Student at work sets out reference rules by place of residence. For Brussels, it states a maximum of 240 hours per quarter, with an exception in July, August and September if you continue studying after summer, checked in November. That concerns benefits, not the size of the annual social-contribution allowance.
For Wallonia, the same source distinguishes the 650 reduced-contribution hours from an additional 240 hours per quarter at ordinary contributions, checked in November. These summaries do not replace your family-benefit fund’s assessment of your file. Ask for confirmation if you combine activities, your circumstances change or you are unsure which hours count.
Tax is another separate issue. Student at work notes that a return is still required even where the conditions result in no tax being due. A remaining hours balance does not automatically mean you remain a dependent child for your parents’ tax purposes. Confirm tax amounts and treatment of online income with SPF Finances; our guide to supplementary income in Belgium helps you prepare questions.
| What it measures | Your next step | |
|---|---|---|
| 650 h/year | Reduced social contributions | Check My Student at work |
| Brussels: 240 h/quarter | Family benefits; conditional summer exception | Contact your benefit fund |
| Wallonia: 650 h + 240 h/quarter | Distinguish reduced and ordinary regimes for benefits | Confirm which hours count |
| Tax | Income and family circumstances, not just hours | Ask SPF Finances |

International students: are you allowed to work in Belgium?
The official foreign-student guidance states that nationals of the European Union, Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland or Switzerland have the same rights and duties as Belgian students, even if they do not study or reside in Belgium. That does not remove the conditions for a student contract. Consider both nationality and study circumstances rather than making assumptions.
For other nationals, the wording on the residence permit is decisive in the official guidance. A permit marked “labour market limited” allows at most 20 hours a week during the school year and unlimited hours during school holidays, checked in November. “Labour market unlimited” refers to the same conditions as Belgian students. Have the precise scope of your document confirmed if uncertain.
These rules do not replace the social-contribution counter: available hours do not override a residence or work restriction. Equally, permission to work does not guarantee reduced contributions on every hour. For non-employed online activity, do not automatically carry over permission connected with student employment. Clarify that point before accepting work, even if it would be done from your accommodation.
Which online options should you compare with a local student job?
Remote work describes a location, not a legal status. A home-based employee role needs the same checks as another hire: an identifiable employer, contract, hours and remuneration. Work supplied on your own account calls for a different assessment. Our guide to finding remote work helps organise the search, but no listing should be accepted on its headline alone.
Microtasks may fit into short periods, but do not guarantee a schedule or regular income. Surveys and occasional services also need assessment under their own terms rather than being automatically described as wages. For a broader comparison, explore our supplementary income ideas. Check third-party platform rates and country availability directly.
Count total time rather than only time spent on accepted work: preparation, searching, administration and payment follow-up all matter. For activity without a student contract, ask how the income should be classified and what steps are required. A small, irregular payment or one received through an online wallet does not settle its treatment. A convenient option is not necessarily administratively suitable for your situation.
| Framework to check | Practical limitation | |
|---|---|---|
| Local employment | Student contract and employer | Travel and scheduled shifts |
| Remote employment | Contract and work organisation | Availability and equipment |
| Own-account services | Confirm status and administration | Finding clients and follow-up |
| Microtaches | Adult-only platform, no student contract | Variable tasks and withdrawal thresholds |
Decision grid: work categories, with no promise of vacancies or income.
Microtaches: what can it offer an adult student?
Microtaches offers short microtasks with instructions displayed in each task. It is not an employer: the platform offers no employment, student contract, salary or flexi-job. Registration is free and reserved for adults under the legal age rules of their country of residence. Every account is reviewed and approved by the team, and a profile questionnaire must be completed.
An accepted task must be completed within 60 minutes, and you can have at most 3 accepted tasks at once. Leaving an accepted task unanswered when time expires costs a 20-Ops penalty. Some answers undergo manual checks before credit is added. Only accept a task when you have time to follow its instructions; avoid starting just before a class or journey.
Ops are the platform unit: 1 Ops has a withdrawal value of €0.0042 and a shop value of €0.0082. These values are not an hourly rate because task availability varies by day, country and profile. Our guide to earning money online helps compare supplementary options without mistaking them for a stable salary.
Prioritise an actual employment contract if you need predictable wages. Keep platforms supplementary and recognise their limits.
- Official channels to organise a local search
- Compare options against your timetable and journey
- Free Microtaches registration for adults
- No guaranteed hiring or availability
- Separate administrative checks required
- Microtaches offers no student contract or salary
How do you withdraw Microtaches earnings?
A withdrawal is not a payslip. Check the conditions on the Withdrawals page and provider compatibility with your country. The receiving account name must match your verified identity; bank transfers require an IBAN.
| Type | Availability | Where it is used | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bank transfer (IBAN) | Bank | Available from the usual minimum | Bank account with an IBAN, in Europe or elsewhere (fixed fee outside Europe) |
| MVola | Mobile money | Available from 25,000 Ops | Madagascar |

Methods shown on the Withdrawals page of your Microtaches account. Countries listed are examples where the service is common.
The non-withdrawable 10,000-Ops reserve sits alongside the 5,000-Ops withdrawal minimum: a first minimum bank withdrawal therefore requires a 15,000-Ops balance. The 5,000 Ops withdrawn represent €21 before any applicable fees. Do not treat the entire displayed balance as immediately available cash. Methods marked “coming soon” have no promised availability date.
Identity verification becomes available from 1,000 Ops and is required before a first withdrawal or first shop order. An account opened by a minor is refused at this check. Shop orders are processed within two weeks at most. Keep your records and ask SPF Finances how they apply to your circumstances; a platform’s internal cap is not a general tax-exemption threshold.
How can you spot a suspicious student job offer?
Le Forem states clearly on its vacancies page that no offer published on its site requires payment and that requests for money should be reported. Treat entry fees, compulsory kits or payments to “reserve the position” as warning signs. Do not confuse a verified administrative process with a transfer demanded by an unknown contact.
A WhatsApp-only exchange without a verifiable employer or explanation of the contract is reason to pause an application. The app alone proves neither fraud nor legitimacy: what matters is the missing information. Find an official contact independently of the link you received and ask for confirmation. Never send bank authentication or login codes to prove your commitment.
Be cautious about arrangements asking you to receive and forward money for someone else. You are looking for work, not a role as a financial intermediary. If you have already shared documents or made a payment, keep the messages and promptly contact the organisations involved. Our guide to home-packing job warning signs provides another practical screening framework.
- Good sign:Employer and contact independently verified
- Good sign:Contract, gross pay, location and hours explained
- Good sign:Allowance and personal restrictions checked
- Warning sign:Payment demanded to get hired
- Warning sign:Compulsory kit sold by an unknown recruiter
- Warning sign:Messaging only, no verifiable identity or contract
- Where can you find student jobs in Brussels?
- Start with the official Actiris vacancies portal and read each complete advert. Ask about the actual workplace, shifts and proposed contract. Prepare your availability and Student at work certificate. No portal guarantees that you will be hired; keep vacancy references and confirm that positions are still open before travelling to an interview.
- How should you search in Charleroi or Liège?
- Use Le Forem’s official vacancies page and build searches around the city and your availability. Save criteria and set up alerts if useful. Check where each result comes from: Le Forem explains that its advisers do not validate offers it does not manage. Compare the return journey as well as the advertised distance before deciding whether to apply.
- Can you work more than 650 hours?
- Yes. According to Student at work, checked in November, 650 hours is the annual reduced-contribution allowance, not a prohibition on further work. Additional hours attract ordinary contributions. A student contract is still required if you meet its conditions. Check family benefits, tax circumstances and any residence-permit restrictions separately rather than treating the hours counter as permission for everything.
- What does a student earn in Brussels?
- There is no single wage that applies across the city. Student at work refers to the sector, collective agreement and joint committee, or the guaranteed average minimum monthly income where no sector agreement applies. Ask for gross pay and an explanation of deductions. This guide does not claim a guaranteed hourly amount or an average local student wage.
- How can you apply without experience?
- Present your studies, projects and relevant skills honestly, using concrete examples. Make available days and times clear, along with exam periods. Tailor a short message to the vacancy rather than inventing experience. Verify the contact before sharing sensitive documents and ask for written conditions before doing any work. The aim is a credible application, not an exaggerated one.
- Do family benefits depend on the workplace?
- Student at work summarises different rules according to where you live. Do not merge Brussels and Wallonia rules simply because you work in another city. The reference hours quoted were checked in November and should be confirmed with your benefit fund. Your social-contribution counter is not a decision about entitlement to family benefits, even when it shows hours remaining.
- Can an international student work?
- Yes, subject to the conditions set out by Student at work. For some nationals outside the countries covered by equal treatment in this guide, residence-permit wording determines the possibilities. The page states 20 hours weekly during the school year for “labour market limited”, checked in November. Confirm your own case: the social-contribution allowance does not replace permission to work.
- Is Microtaches a student employer?
- No. Microtaches offers short microtasks with displayed instructions, but no employment, student contract, salary or flexi-job. Free registration is for adults, with account review and a profile questionnaire. Available tasks vary by day, country and profile. Administrative and tax treatment of this income must be assessed separately; being a student does not automatically turn platform activity into student employment.
- Can you immediately withdraw your first Ops?
- No. Identity verification is mandatory and becomes available from 1,000 Ops. The withdrawal minimum is 5,000 Ops and the non-withdrawable reserve is 10,000 Ops, so a first minimum bank withdrawal needs a 15,000-Ops balance. Other methods have a 25,000-Ops threshold. Check the conditions and provider compatibility before relying on payment, and do not treat your entire balance as withdrawable.
- Should you pay to get a student job?
- Le Forem states that no vacancy published on its site requires payment. A request to reserve a position with money or buy a kit should make you pause and verify the contact. Recruitment confined to messaging without an identifiable employer is another warning sign. Do not share bank authentication or login codes, even if the contact claims this is necessary for hiring.
