How to Make Money Online in Cameroon: 6 Legit Methods (No Scams)

Wondering how to make money online in Cameroon with a smartphone, a little spare time and no starting capital? It is a fair question: “get rich quick” offers spread fast on WhatsApp and messaging apps. This guide covers the methods that actually exist, with their requirements, timelines and risks, and without any promise of earnings.

What these figures show: more than 12 million Cameroonians are already online, and the CFA franc (XAF) is pegged to the euro at a fixed rate. Conversions between euros and FCFA are therefore exact, which makes your math simple whenever a platform pays in euros.

How do you make money online in Cameroon when starting from scratch?

Start with what you already know how to do, not with whatever promises the most. Someone with no particular skill can begin with micro-tasks or surveys. Someone who writes well, translates, draws or has mastered a school subject can aim for freelancing or tutoring.

The second criterion is payment. In Cameroon, Orange Money and MTN MoMo are the two main mobile money services. A method that only pays through a channel you cannot access is useless to you, however profitable it looks.

If you want to compare specific sites, our article Online work in Cameroon: sites that pay via Orange Money and MTN MoMo reviews them. For a regional overview, see our complete guide to online work in French-speaking Africa.

What this chart shows: more than two-thirds of Microtaches workers live in Africa, and Cameroon alone accounts for more than 3,200 of them. You would not be on your own. Keep in mind, though, that the size of a community says nothing about your future earnings, because task availability varies by day, country and profile.

What are the legit ways to earn money online, and which one fits you?

The table below compares six methods across five criteria. Timelines are qualitative: no reliable data can tell you how many days it will take you to receive a first payment.

Comparison of ways to make money online in Cameroon (qualitative assessment by Microtaches; always check each platform's terms).

What this table shows: the fast methods (selling, tutoring) depend on your local network, while the methods open to everyone (micro-tasks, surveys) come with thresholds and waiting times. Freelancing is often the most promising path in the medium term, but it also takes the most effort at the start.

Many people combine two paths: a no-skill method to get started, and a skill they build on the side. That is more realistic than betting everything on a single source.

How do micro-tasks actually work?

A micro-task is a small piece of online work done by following precise instructions. If the concept is new to you, our page Micro-tasks: definition, examples and how you get paid explains it in detail. On Microtaches, everything runs on published rules:

  • Sign-up is free and reviewed by the team, so approval is not instant.
  • Completing your profile earns you a 10 Ops bonus.
  • You accept a task, follow the instructions shown and submit your answer, within 60 minutes maximum.
  • You can have up to 3 tasks in progress at once.
  • You can drop a task with no penalty during the first 10 minutes; a task that expires without an answer costs you 20 Ops.
  • Every task is reviewed before Ops are credited.

The 20 Ops penalty deserves your attention: only accept a task if you have the time and the connection to finish it. On a limited data plan, it is safer to accept one task at a time.

How much are your Ops worth in CFA francs?

Earnings are counted in Ops. At withdrawal, 1 Ops is worth €0.0042. Because the CFA franc has a fixed peg, the conversion to FCFA is exact, before any fees your operator may charge.

Value of Ops at withdrawal, in FCFAMicrotaches calculation based on the withdrawal rate of €0.0042 per Ops and the fixed peg €1 = 655.957 FCFA.
Value of Ops at withdrawal, in FCFA
FCFA
5,000 Ops13,775 FCFA
10,000 Ops27,550 FCFA
15,000 Ops41,325 FCFA
50,000 Ops137,751 FCFA

What this chart shows: 5,000 Ops, the minimum per withdrawal request, equals €21, or 13,775 FCFA. Remember that a 10,000 Ops reserve cannot be withdrawn: for a first withdrawal by bank transfer, your balance must therefore reach at least 15,000 Ops. For mobile money, the threshold is different; we cover it below.

There is another option: the shop, where 1 Ops is worth €0.0082 in gift cards or products, about 1.95 times better than at withdrawal. That only makes sense if one of the cards on offer is genuinely useful to you; otherwise, withdrawing remains more practical.

Illustrative example: Armel, a student in Douala, spends his free evenings on micro-tasks from his phone. He only accepts one task at a time so he never risks the expiry penalty. Before starting, he checked that his MTN MoMo account is registered in his own name, matching his ID card.

Do paid surveys work in Cameroon?

Sometimes, but less often than people think. Survey panels look for specific profiles, often in only a handful of countries. Prolific, for example, does not include Cameroon in its list of accepted countries.

Before signing up, check three things on the panel's website: the list of countries, the payout threshold and the payment methods. Also know that a survey can end halfway through if your profile does not match the target: this is called a “screen-out”; payment depends on the panel's rules.

Our guide Paid surveys: legit panels, payout thresholds and payment methods details the terms of the main panels. The key rule: a legit panel never asks you to pay to answer surveys.

Freelancing from Cameroon: how do you sell writing, translation, design or assistance?

Freelancing means selling a skill to clients, one project at a time. It is the path that can make the most of your time, but it requires real know-how and some prospecting. Examples of accessible fields from Cameroon include:

  • Web writing: articles, product descriptions, website copy. French is an asset with French-speaking clients.
  • Translation: French-English in particular, a common skill in Cameroon thanks to official bilingualism.
  • Design: logos, social media visuals, posters, using free tools to get started.
  • Remote assistance: managing emails and calendars, data entry and document formatting.

To get started, prepare work samples, even ones you made for yourself. Our guides Paid web writing: the complete guide to getting started and Virtual assistant: tasks, rates, legal status and tools explain how to build an offer. The second one mainly targets France, but the method still applies.

Payment is the tricky part with foreign clients. Services such as Payoneer offer receiving accounts, depending on your eligibility. For PayPal, check PayPal's country-by-country documentation before making it your main payment method. With Cameroonian clients, Orange Money and MTN MoMo are all you need.

Local selling, content creation, online tutoring: are they worth it?

Selling online to local customers

Selling products through local channels can be a way to collect a first payment, straight to your mobile money account. The risks are unsold stock and fake payment screenshots: always confirm the money has actually reached your account before delivering.

Creating content

Videos, niche pages, podcasts: content creation costs almost nothing in money, but a great deal in time and data. Income, when it comes, arrives late and irregularly. Treat it as a long-term project, not a way to cover the end of the month.

Tutoring online

If you are strong in math, English or exam preparation, you can offer video-call lessons to students in your city or in the diaspora. Word of mouth works well, and families pay easily by Orange Money or MTN MoMo.

Illustrative example: Mireille, a seamstress in Yaoundé, posts her creations on WhatsApp and gets paid by Orange Money. In the evening, she teaches English over video call to two middle-school students. Two modest activities, both built on skills she already had.

Can you make money with your phone in Cameroon?

Yes, for many of these methods: micro-tasks, surveys, local selling, video tutoring and part of content creation can all be done on a smartphone. Freelancing (design, long-form writing) is still more comfortable on a computer. The real limit is often internet access and the cost of data.

Share of population using the internet
%
Senegal60.6%
Cameroon41.9%
Ivory Coast40.7%
DR Congo30.5%

What this chart shows: at 41.9% internet penetration, Cameroon is on par with Ivory Coast, ahead of DR Congo but behind Senegal. In practice, most Cameroonians are not online yet, and connection quality varies widely between big cities and rural areas.

Payment, on the other hand, is well suited to phones. According to the GSMA report on mobile money published on March 24, Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for 66% of the global value of mobile money transactions, about USD 1.4 trillion over one year. Your Orange Money or MTN MoMo account is the natural tool for receiving money earned online.

How do you get paid via Orange Money or MTN MoMo, and what are the taxes?

On Microtaches, you request a withdrawal from the Withdrawals page of your account. Before your first withdrawal, identity verification is mandatory: it becomes available once your balance reaches 1,000 Ops, and processing takes up to 7 business days. Our article on the KYC verification process lists the documents you need.

Withdrawal methods on Microtaches

Your Ops can be withdrawn to a bank account, a mobile money account or an online wallet. Bank transfer is available from the usual minimum; MVola, Orange Money, Wave, MTN MoMo, PayPal, Skrill and Neteller are available from 25,000 Ops; Revolut and Crypto are coming soon. In Cameroon, mobile money is often the most convenient option.

Three points matter most from Cameroon. First, the name on your Orange Money or MTN MoMo account must match the name on your Microtaches account: a SIM registered to a relative will block the payout. Second, the payout arrives up to 3 weeks after your request is approved. Third, bank transfers outside Europe carry a fixed fee of 800 Ops, the only fee Microtaches publishes.

On the operator side, MTN's MoMo rate card lists transfer taxes of 0.2% of the amount plus 4 FCFA; the extra 4 FCFA comes from the finance law passed at the end of 2024. For example, a 10,000 FCFA transfer carries 24 FCFA in tax (20 + 4), and a 50,000 FCFA transfer, 104 FCFA. Cash-out fees at an agent are set by your operator: check its rate card before withdrawing.

To dig deeper, read our guide Online work paid via Orange Money, country by country. Also note that Microtaches applies an internal cap of €2,500 in withdrawals per year; it is a platform rule, not a law, explained in our article on the €2,500 annual cap.

What online scams should you avoid in Cameroon?

Cyberfraud is widespread. According to the 2025 figures reported by ANTIC and in ministerial statements, it caused more than 1.027 billion FCFA in losses, with 471 cases of fraud or phishing, and 59 fraudulent financial platforms identified, 40 of which were shut down. These figures cover cyberfraud in general, not just fake jobs.

The four most common traps

  • The guaranteed-return “investment”: you are promised to double your money in a few days. This is the pattern of fraudulent financial platforms.
  • The task scam: small tasks offered via WhatsApp or Telegram, paid at first, followed by demands for deposits to “keep going” or “unlock your earnings.” Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr, the French government's cybercrime assistance service, issued an alert about this scheme in October.
  • Paying to get a job: application, training or equipment fees. In Ivory Coast, a fake job offer impersonating the Agence Emploi Jeunes demanded 2,600 FCFA in “application fees” (denied by the agency in January 2025).
  • Fake recruitment for jobs abroad: in Thiès, Senegal, five people were arrested in July 2025 for a fake recruitment scheme charging fees of up to 600,000 FCFA.
Legit site or scam: the 2-minute checkA single red flag is enough to walk away.
  • Good sign:Sign-up is free, with no payment required before you work
  • Good sign:Withdrawal terms (minimum, timelines, fees) are published
  • Good sign:Identity verification happens in your account on the website, not over WhatsApp
  • Warning sign:You are promised a guaranteed return or to “double” your money
  • Warning sign:A recruiter contacts you on WhatsApp or Telegram about small tasks
  • Warning sign:You are asked to make a deposit to unlock your earnings
  • Warning sign:You are charged application, training or equipment fees
  • Warning sign:Someone asks for your Orange Money or MTN MoMo PIN

What this list shows: a legitimate platform makes money from the work you deliver, never from what you pay it. To learn more, see our guide Legit work from home: real jobs, scams and the checklist to never pay upfront.

Is Microtaches a good fit for workers in Cameroon?

Here is our assessment, limitations included. It is based on the platform's published rules, not on earnings, which are never guaranteed.

Read the instructions shown in full, work on one task at a time, and drop it within the first 10 minutes if you are unsure.

  5. 5

Frequently asked questions

Can you really make money online in Cameroon?
Yes, but with no guarantee. Micro-tasks, freelancing, local selling or online tutoring work for some people, depending on their time, skills and connection. Be wary of any offer that promises a fixed amount.
How can I make money with my phone in Cameroon?
By choosing mobile-friendly methods. Micro-tasks, surveys (if the panel accepts Cameroon), selling via WhatsApp and video tutoring all work on a smartphone. Plan for enough data and a mobile money account in your own name.
Does Microtaches pay via Orange Money and MTN MoMo in Cameroon?
Yes. Orange Money and MTN MoMo are available from 25,000 Ops, from the Withdrawals page of your account. Bank transfer is possible from the minimum withdrawal amount, with an 800 Ops fee outside Europe.
How much is 5,000 Ops in FCFA?
13,775 FCFA at withdrawal. 5,000 Ops are worth €21 at the rate of €0.0042 per Ops, and €1 = 655.957 FCFA. In the shop, the same 5,000 Ops are worth €41 in gift cards or products.
Do I have to pay to start working online?
No. A legit platform never asks for sign-up fees, application fees or a deposit to unlock earnings. Any request like that is a scam warning sign.
How long does it take to receive a first withdrawal?
It can take several weeks. On Microtaches, identity verification takes up to 7 business days, then the payout arrives up to 3 weeks after the request is approved. You also need to have reached the withdrawal thresholds.
What tax does MTN MoMo charge on transfers in Cameroon?
0.2% of the amount plus 4 FCFA, according to MTN's published rate card. A 10,000 FCFA transfer therefore carries 24 FCFA in tax. Cash-out fees at an agent are added on top, according to the operator's rate card.
Do paid surveys work in Cameroon?
Not always. Many panels only cover a few countries, and Prolific does not accept Cameroon. Check the list of countries and the payment methods before signing up.
Can I receive the money on a relative's mobile money account?
No. The name on the receiving account must match the name on your verified account. Use an Orange Money or MTN MoMo account registered in your own name.
